About the Artist Melissa Hickok grew up in Charlotte, NC with a love of visual and performing arts. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with her B.A. in Studio Art, she began working with several arts organizations and exploring teaching. Teaching soon became a career giving her the opportunity to pass on a knowledge and love of art, photography and ceramics to high school students. Melissa made her first ultrasound painting in 2005 for two dear friends who were having their first child. She wanted to give them something more unique than what could bought from a gift registry. "I was inspired by the (sonogram) image whose appearance was a balance between unrecognizable ambiguity and joyous affirmation of life in the same moment" recalls Melissa. The desire to create meaningful experiences that preserved this first glimpse of life and a love for painting birthed the idea for the business.
About the Paintings The appearance of each painting is different, just as seen in the variance of every baby’s personality and physical traits. Image editing software is used to clarify, alter and bring out various aspects of the form. Through this process, the design reveals itself and becomes completely one-of-a-kind. The image is transferred to the canvas and hand painted with acrylics. Melissa says of her ultrasound paintings, "The most enjoyable aspects of my role as an artist are are the ability to constantly evolve this process and to create pieces tailor made to anyone’s aesthetic. More important still, is the opportunity to inspire a deeper connection between the parent and the life they have created."
Sonogram paintings are: o An artistic recording of baby’s momentous first picture o The perfect gift for any mom at any occasion o A unique alternative to the shower registry gift o A creative and special addition to nursery décor The appearance of the painted ultrasounds can be grouped into four categories. Let's see some examples...
Style A: Two Color Block This bold and graphic method of manipulating the sonogram involves breaking up the image into flat shapes. Two values showing positive and negative space is most similar to the appearance of the unaltered sonogram. This is the most simple and minimal design for your painting.
 Style A: Two Color Block
Style B: Three to Four Color Block Similar to Style A, this style breaks the sonogram down into three or four flat shape values (colors). The extra values give the design added depth and dimension. This style has clean hard-edged lines and an appearance similar to that of a silkscreen.
Style B: Two to Four Color Block | sonogram | detail
Style B | Painting the extra deep canvas edges with an accent color adds an unexpected design interest.
Style C: Abstracted and Textured To abstract an image means to alter or step away from the physical representation and recognizable quality of the image and instead focus on the expressive nature. Sonograms can take on many different appearances through the use of image enhancing software. By bringing out hidden designs and textures within the image and removing the immediate recognition of subject matter, the true nature is able to reveal itself to the viewer in its own special way. This style is more intricate, modern, and funky and will appeal to those who truly want a piece that is as unique as they are.

Style D: 3D/4D Blended Today's ultrasound technology is truly amazing. If you have three or four dimensional ultrasound images, the painting style possibilities are endless. This style focuses on the realistic features and form of your baby. Colors are blended smoothly using light and shadow to showcase the special true to life appearance of the 3D/4D ultrasound image. | *The fourth dimension in "4D" refers to time. 4D ultrasound technology produces 3D still images and, with the addition of time, shows the live motion of your baby.
