FC: Sunset Sudbury School | 2010-2011
 Start-up & | Sunset Sudbury School | 2010-2011 | First School Year
In February of 2010, we began meeting at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pembroke Pines on Fridays for what we called "The Demo School". | It was a great opportunity for everyone to bond and also for us to practice this radical education philosophy, which none of us had ever experienced first-hand. | The Demo School
Snails were a big thing at Trinity and so were burrowing owls, climbing trees, folding chair mazes, art, puzzles, and spinning fast on the round-about.
After two years of searching for a site, we finally signed a lease! We were so happy that day and couldn't believe someone would actually trust us with their building. | The new sign arrived! | Start-up | There was so much to do in order to open our doors on the first day of school.
We constructed a new bathroom, laid down new flooring, installed a fire alarm system, and put up a new fence. | Family and friends helped prepare the site.
Media | The Miami Herald wrote an article about the opening of our new school and came out to take pictures of the founders (Dionne, Kathy, and Idelma) and their children.
After an article about the school appeared in the Sun-Sentinel in December, we got a lot more media attention... | Then Dionne traveled to Miami for an interview on FOX News. | First, the Today Show spent a day at our school interviewing students, parents, and staff.
Everyone came to school dressed in costume on Halloween and stayed in character all day long.
The freedom to hang out, talk and play with your friends at school is priceless! | Hanging Out
 In the garden...
The garden provided us with so many possibilities... climbing trees, picking flowers, making potions, becoming fairies, catching lizards, finding caterpillars, and playing in the rain.
The Basics | Learning was often a social affair...
ART | Art was a popular activity at school, in the art room as well as outdoors
Who knew you could have so much fun with TAPE? We couldn't keep enough of it, both masking and duct tape, at school.
Food | The kitchen was always a busy place with food art, food science, birthdays, pizza parties, and contests.
 Making ice cream. Yum.
We had many visitors throughout the year. Family, friends, and educators added so much to our community.
Trash 2 Treasure was such a great experience. We learned about the importance of protecting our planet by recycling and re-using. We also got lots of cool stuff. | Field Trips
This year's field trips included Miami Metro Zoo, Seminole Native Village, and various parks. | Our trip to Target was more fun than anyone expected.
What's a Sudbury school in South Florida...
...without a trip to the beach?
