Basic Information Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12th, 1809, in Hardin County, Kentucky. He died on April 15, 1865, in Washington D.C. He was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, who thought that the South would rebel again when the war ended. He is most famous for winning the American Civil War, freeing slaves, and ending slavery in America.

Childhood/Family When Abe was a child, he worked on a farm, and he was uneducated, because his father could not teach him. When he was 12, his mother died of 'milk sickness'. He then had a new step-mom, which he was fond of. Throughout his life, he only had 18 months of schooling, mostly from teachers who did not work for very long. He was an avid reader. At age 22, he left home and ended up opening and working at a General Store in Illinois, and went back home when he witnessed slavery firsthand. | Young Lincoln Statue

Childhood/Family(Cont.) In 1842, Abe married to Mary Todd. He was working as a law professor.(His General Store business didn't work out.) They had four sons,(Robert, Edward, William, and Thomas). Only their son Robert lived past age 18. His wife was sent temporarily to a mental health hospital after their children's death. Abraham was also reportedly clinically depressed.

Honest When he worked at a general store, he was fair to everyone. If he shortchanged someone, he would close up shop and give the person the right amount-regardless of how far he had to walk. Some people then asked him to judge fights, contests, and arguments. They relied on his honesty, integrity, and impartiality. After this, he moved to Springfield, where he became a law professor. The people in this area knew that most lawyers were dishonest. He won many cases that people hired him for. He also gave at least half of the money people gave him as reward, "That they were too generous". (This is a stamp of him when he was a lawyer)

Politician Abraham Lincoln became the 16th President of the United States, and was on the side of the Union during the Civil War. He gave lots of speeches such as Gettysburg, The Cooper-Union Speech, and the House Divided Speech. Abe Lincoln served in the white house for a little bit over four years.

Soldier Abraham Lincoln was elected as a Captain in the Black Hawk War,(the Native American leading on the opposing side was named Black Hawk) but he decided that he would enlist in something lower since he did not have enough fighting skill. He then reinstated himself as the rank of "Private". He also assisted with the burial of the dead at Kellogg's Grove. | This plaque mentions Lincolns presence at Kellogg's Grove

I fear that war might break out between the North and the South. But that is another matter. For now, we shall celebrate my great achievement. Best of Wishes, Abraham Lincoln President of the U.S.A.

Dear Hero Dear Mr. Abraham Lincoln, I have come to say that you are one of the heroes of mine. In your honor, I have chosen to do a report about you. You are my hero since you have one thing I don't have: skills in public speaking. Your speeches moved the whole nation. I do not think I could give speeches such as you did. You have led an interesting life. You've opened a general store, been in two wars, worked as a rail-splitter, law professor, and a politician. You have had many failures, but you achieved great accomplishments making you one of the greatest humans that ever lived. Respectfully Yours, Phillip Johnson 7th grade student
