FC: Chapter 7 American history immigration project. Due 10/19/11 Go02265 Gabriel Oberley

This book will be about Immigration into America. It will be covering the following ethic groups; Poland, Germany, Liechtenstein the Ukraine and The Soviet Union/Russia.

The first Ukraine to migrate to America was Ivan Bohdan in the year 1608. | The Ukraine | The Ukraine's mass migrated to America in three waves the first being during the Second industrial revolution; around the late 19th century. The second wave came in between the World Wars, the third came after WW2. | In 1897 a discrimintory law was passed in Pennsylvania that required non-citizen miners to pay an attentional tax.

The Ukraine's migrated toward cities like New York City. In fact New York City has the largest Ukraine population in the country according to the 2000 U.S census. | The Ukraine's were not treated very well at first like most ethic groups that migrated to America. Mainly because they spoke a different language, wore different clothes and, ate different food.

Soviet Union/Russia | The Russians migrated to America in several periods. 1880s-1914; 1920-1939; 1945-1955; and 1970s-present. | Most of them settled in the northeastern United States. In states like New York, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. | The Russians have avoided participating in the government and there-fore have not caused any major events. With a few expections of local governments where Russian immigrants are high.

This photo shows how American influenced traditional Russian clothing.

Poland | Immigrants from Poland like other ethic groups migrated to America in waves the first being from 1800s-1860. | They mainly settled in Chicago. Poland was a mostly catholic nation and therefore catholic traditions where ingrained in the lives of the Poles, back when they where first immigrating to America they was separation between them and a mostly protestant nation.

Germany | From 1675 to 1677 William Penn made trips to Germany on behalf of the quaker faith. As a religious sects in Germany began immigrating to America to escape discrimination. | By the time the first U.S census took place more than 8.6% of the overall population was German

The German immigrants settled pretty much every where in the US. weather it be in the mid-west or the south, to the northeast to the west. It all really depended on where they landed. | Germans stayed away from the government until Carl Schurz, who was very politically active. The first president that had a german surname was Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Liechtenstein | Liechtenstein is a very small country, with a population of about 35,000 (as of 2009) | Its total area is only 62 square miles.(A little bigger than Pittsburgh PA) | So as you can imagine for a such a small country it is kind of hard to find information on it. | What I did find out about Liechtenstein immigration to America will be on the next page!

I couldn't find any photos of Liechtenstein immigrants so I got the next best thing. This is a anime character from the series call Hetalia(where country's are personified) the girl in the picture to the right is Liechtenstein if you haven't already figured that out. | The first large group that came to America was in 1851-1852. | When they got to America they landed in New Orleans and headed north for Dubuque, Iowa. | They fit in quite well since the majority of Dubuque was German.

Conclusion | Well thank your for reading my project and I hope you like it. I had a lot of fun learning about the ethic groups that I picked.
