1: Andrew Jackson was born in the Carolinas in 1767
2: As a young adult, Jackson became a lawyer.
3: Later, he joined the US Army.
4: In the War of 1812,General Andrew Jackson led the American forces to victory in the Battle for New Orleans.
5: After winning at New Orleans, Jackson was hailed as a war hero, and was very popular among the American people
6: Buoyed by the popularity from his win at New Orleans, Jackson was elected into the government. | In 1821 he was the governor of the Florida Territory. Then, in 1823, he was elected to the US Senate.
7: In 1828 Andrew Jackson was elected to be the 7th president of the USA. Because he was so popular, he not only won the electorial college, but also the popular vote.
8: As president, Jackson prefered to use his executive power to make decisions without congress' approval. This was criticized by some as being unfair, but many thought that a strong leader was what the country needed.
9: As president, Jackson made many decisons that changed America forever. One of these was the passage of the Indian Removal Act, which required that native people move to make way for eager pioneers. This led to the infamous Trail of Tears.
10: Andrew Jackson Today | The Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812, and gave America control of all British controlled land in North America. However, because of slow communications, the Battle for New Orleans was fought after the treaty was signed. Without the treaty, our country would be much smaller than it is today.
11: Today you can visit the Hermitage, which was Jackson's mansion. It has been preserved, and is available for tours. | Andrew Jackson is found on the 20 dollar bill.
