FC: My Travels Through the Orient

My beloved Philippa, When I left London three years ago, I had promised to write you weekly of my travels. As I quickly discovered once I left Europe, however, that the mail service in less civilized places was nearly non-existent. I resolved, therefore, to write you weekly but to keep those letters as a record of my voyages. Now that I've returned, my sweet, and can finally look forward to our marriage, I have collected my letters (or those that survived) and have bound them in this volume. I present it to you, on the occasion of our wedding, this 28th day of February, 1707. With all my love, Fondly Yours, John

Love, On the 16th day of March, the caravan entered the ancient city of Baghdad. For nearly one month, we had seen traveled across endless desert. Our caravan lost two camels in the process, and we were forced to sell some of our steel to purchase replacements. When we finally neared the walls, we found the people within as curious as we. They stared, goggle-eyed, at our weaponry. It surely far surpasses anything made here. We were halted by the guards, who insisted on seeing our papers; we were even forced to lay out our wares before their eyes....

These people also have a monarch, but they consider their "shah" to be nearly god-like in powers-- much as that infernal French king insists he is. We, lowly merchants, were not considered important enough for an audience with this man, but our contact here, Afshan, was once a member of a group which met in audience with the man. Afshan says that his Shah is of imposing height, and that the man insists on specific protocols for his audience. Afshan was unable to carry his weapons into the palace; his aide was unable to accompany him as well....

My dear, We left Baghdad this morning, our hearts lighter and our purses heavier; we aim now for the delights of India and the spices which surely await us there....
