S: Holocaust and Genocide Project

BC: The Auschwitz Rebellion

FC: Auschwitz-Birkenau Uprising

1: WHEN?WHERE? The Auschwitz Uprising occurred October 7,1944. This took place at Crematorium 4 at Auschwitz Birkenau.

2: WHY? WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE? The Nazis gave the task of transferring bodies from the gas chambers and burning them in the crematoria to the SonderKammando. After three or four months of this work, the Nazis would kill all the members of the unit because they had seen or heard too much. After that they would replace them with new people. After figuring out this policy the Jews decided to rebel. With the purpose to escape.

3: Jewish women who worked at the Union factory. Rosa Robota, Ella Gartner, Esther Vichkablum, Regina Saperstein and several hundred prisoners assigned to Crematorium 4 decided they were the ones who would rebel. WHO WERE THE MEMBERS?

4: HOW WELL ORGANIZED? Rosa, Ella, Esther and Regina succeeded in smuggling small amounts of gunpowder every time they returned from work. Robel, a Polish Jew who was a member of the SonderKommando retrieved the explosive material for them. Borodin, a Russian technician was able to produce hand grenades using the material. Forbesky, the electrician whose work granted him access to the SonderKommando, served as the liaison between the people involved.

5: WHAT HAPPENED? | During the uprising the prisoners killed 3 guards and others, blew up a crematorium, and an adjacent gas chamber. They used the hand grenades they made to do this. | The Germans crushed the revolt and killed almost all the prisoners involved in the rebellion. The women who smuggled gunpowder were publicly hanged in early January, 1945.

7: They knew what there fate was if they didn't rebel so they took the risk of being killed or possibly becoming free.

9: WHAT EMOTINAL, MENTAL, INTELLECTUAL, FINACIAL, PHYSICAL, AND SOCIAL RESORCES DID THEY USE? eMoTionaL, MeNtaL: The job of the SonderKommando and knowing they were going to be killed had to be a lot of stress. intellECuAl: The women smuggled in gunpowder which the were able to make hand grenades out of. SoCial: they spread the word about when and where the rebellion would take place.

10: The Jews used grenades and there fists as resources to succeed.

11: They fought for there freedom and their lives against the Nazis.

13: The Jews in this plan accomplished alot. Smuggling in gunpowder and an establishing a well organized plan were apart of what they accomplished. They also managed to kill a German overseer, 3 SS guards, and a SS company commander. They wounded 12 SS members and 600 of there peers escaped from all of this, which is a big accomplishment. | If one person didn't pull their weight they wouldn't have been able to set 600 Jews free, kill a few people in charge or destroy a crematorium. If one person didn't contribute to the rebellion it maybe wouldn't have been as successful. So the moral of the story is one person can make a big differance.
