FC: Benefits of Antipsychotic Meds | By: Kristen Clyatt

Antipsychotic medications help to control mentally ill patients symptoms. Medical research has shown that symptoms of psychotic breaks are associated with a chemical imbalance in the brain. These drugs work to restore the natural chemical balance of the brain while also deregulating psychotic symptoms. Antipsychotics cannot overall cure mental illnesses, however they have shown results in eliminating symptoms of psychosis.

Antipsychotics are broken into two categories: typical and atypical antipsychotics. Typical refers to the first generation drugs and usually is prescribed to patients suffering from acute mania. These drugs are understood to have more side effects than atypical medications. Psychiatrists also concluded that typical antipsychotics are less effective in treating mental illnesses. | Typical

Atypical, or second generation antipsychotics have less side effects than typical meds do. Psychiatrists recommend using atypical antipsychotics over typical because of overall effectiveness. Several studies suggest that atypical medications improve mood, thinking and motivation in patients. Withdrawal symptoms are also less likely in mentally ill patients when taking atypical antipsychotics. | Atypical

“My greatest fear is this brain of mine. The worst thing imaginable is to be terrified of one's own mind, the very matter that controls all that we are and all that we do and feel.” ~Man suffering from Schizophrenia

This is what a person suffering from schizophrenia deals with on an everyday basis.

Antipsychotics are intended to help patients, not harm them. When given correct dosages, patients see a significant change in their behavior, mood and overall illness.
