4: Setting Charley is a fifteen year old boy that wants to join the army to become a man. after convincing his mother to let him go he had to listen to his little brother cry and beg him not to go because he didn't want him to to leave him. That had to be the hardest part of getting in because when he got to the bass he had no trouble signing up older than he really is.
5: Theme The only trouble he had was the part that his clothes didn't fit him.The pants were to short, the socks were to tall, the shirt was to tight , and the hat folded down when it rained. He thought there would ever be a real war until the day they attacked and he had to see people die beside him and shot at people, and kill them for the first time. He was just ready to go home. By the time he went home he was 21 and was to old to get married and have children because he didn't think he would make it very long.
6: Characters Charley- He is the fifteen year old boy that wants to become a man. By becoming a man he feels he needs to join the army. His mother doesn't think he can do it, but he knows he can. He never gives up in the entire novel. With all the struggles during the army he never regrets the decision that he made.
7: Orren- He was the younger brother that didn't want Charley to go to the army and cried at his feet.He knew he couldn't stop him from going , but he is scared to let him go. He doesn't want to lose his only older brother. He knew it was for the best and one day he would have to do it ti, but he just didn't want it to be his older brother now.
8: 1.The internal problem was that he wanted to go to the army to become a man.His mother didn't want him to go because he was to young to be on his own in the world. the external problem was that they got in a huge fight because she wouldn't let him go. He went anyways because he didn't want to listen to her. 1. the resolution for the conflict was that he did become a man. He made it through the war, but saw many horrible things.
9: 2.also, another conflict in this novel was when he had problems with his clothing the first day. He was terrified because he wasn't suppose to be there but he was.well he got through the gate but the clothes were to short and too tall. The pants were to short , socks were to tall, the hat folded on the sides when it rained. 2. The resolution to this problem is they had to find another pier of clothes . the whole time he was scared they were going to find out that he was under age.
10: Born May 17,1939, Gary Paulsen is one of America's most popular writers for young people. He was never a very good student but he made it with pretty low grades. He has always loved to read since he was a little boy. He developed how to read when a librarian gave him a good book to began to read. He began spending hours alone in the basement of his apartment building , Reading one book after another.
11: The main part of this novel that reminded me of myself is that he is so determined to become a man that he will do anything to get there. it reminds me of myself because i am a very determined person and will do anything to get what i want. the good part i loved like when he got in the war with no trouble. He made a lot of friends but lost them. he thought he would never see the things he did but they have seriously changed his life.
