FC: Changing Colors | By Lindsay McNatt
One spring, a leaf was busy growing on a tall tree in the middle of the forest. It started as a little bud. Soon, it grew bigger and started to unfurl. As it opened its edges, the leaf could see the world.
The leaf looked around and noticed many wondrous things. There was a wide, blue sky. Birds and butterflies sailed through the open expanse. Below the leaf's high perch many other trees and plants reached towards the warm sunlight. The forest floor was also full of life and wonder. Looking around, the leaf loved all the beautiful and bright colors that could be found in the forest. One tree stood out among the others. The leaves filling its branches were not the same green as those around it. Instead they were a bright red that blazed like the sun. The little green leaf wished it could have such a bright color.
Spring changed to summer, and soon the nights grew longer and cooler. Autumn arrived in the forest. As the leaf looked on, other leafs that used to share its green color began to change. There were bright orange leaves, dark red leaves, and light yellow leaves. The green leaf felt sad and wished it would change, too.
On a cool autumn morning, the leaf awoke to a strange feeling. It felt as if things inside it were changing. Over the next few days, the leaf realized that it was changing! The deep green colors were slowly fading, leaving a lovely gold instead. The leaf was overjoyed to be such a lovely color.
