FC: Journey To America

Dear Journal, I am from Italy and my name is Adriana. I was born on May 9th, 1912. My family wants to go to America so that I will have more opportunities and make money. I went to America when I was four years old. | This is my family. The one that the mother is holding is me.

When I was on the ship, there were tons of people. Then a storm came and the ship was going up and down. Everybody was screaming and trying to cover themselves from the water. I was so nervous. I almost got a cold from the storm. A lot of people caught a cold. Then we saw the Statue of Liberty. It felt like freedom. I was so happy when I saw that to. | This is the ship

people with only a little bit of suitcases | When we got off the ship, we didn’t have anything. All we had were clothes. All we were allowed to have were two suitcases. All we packed were clothes and nothing else. I felt terrible. We had to walk up these stairs with two suitcases. If we struggled going up the stairs with the suitcases, we were not allowed into Ellis Island. We had to sit in chairs while we wait to get checked in. If you were sick, you were not allowed in. They separated the boys from the girls. I was sad.

While you were getting checked in, they checked your clothes and everything on you. They, also, checked if you were sick. People had to leave because of that. They like healthy people. They also asked questions. They asked my dad questions. Some of the questions we didn’t understand . They asked my dad to spell his name. We didn’t know how to do that. We had to fill out a paper with our name and weight and all that kind of stuff. We didn’t understand some of the questions. It was hard because we didn't understand English. The police officers let us in. | This is the paper we had to sign.

When we got in, we went to a dining room and they gave us food. We didn’t know what this food was. It was really good. They had big tables with lots of plates. I was finally at Ellis Island and felt happy! | This is where we ate.

What I brought | my sneakers | A few of my clothes

I only could pack a little bit

I came from here | To here | My home in Italy | The American flag
