S: Kathryn Clair Seiler - School Years
FC: Kathryn Claire Seiler
Kindergarten 1991 - 1992 | Arnold, CA 1991. Our family moved to our cabin in July. KC started kindergarten at Hazel Fischer Elementary. She made great friends and had an outstanding year! We all loved the mountains. Our cabin was cozy and perfect. | 1796 Cypress Point Drive, Arnold, CA | KC with Misha
The smile.... the heart! | I want to be an artist! | We have dozens of beautiful drawings from kindergarten. We like these because of the smiles. She seems to exude pure joy!
She was a beautiful princess on Halloween. KC neglected to draw the white turtle neck sweater under the princess outfit! After a brutally hot summer and scorching October, Halloween night was extremely brisk We didn't know where to trick or treat in Arnold. That year we just went through White Pines and went to a few stores "in town." She got plenty of candy, but we were a little disappointed...we didn't know to make plans with other kids. We later learned to go to Murphys. A rookie mistake, but she was happy and enjoyed her bag of candy.
Kindergarten Report Card End of Year 1992 | By the spring of 1992 we were hooked on Arnold and decided to buy a more permanent home (versus the "cabin"). We moved to 1989 Sierra View Drive in Blue Lake Springs in the summer of 1992.. At this moment Kathryn wanted to be an artist.
Self portrait of the queen? | With Great Grandma Ann and Mom in the spring of 1992 in Santa Barbara. KC was very shy at this age, obviously clinging to me - perhaps the photographer was unknown to her. Great Grandma Anna died in September 1993. This is perhaps the last time Kathryn saw her Great Grandma. I believe we visited in 1993, but Grandma Ann was hospitalized after a car accident, I don't believe KC visited her in the hospital during that visit.
1992 - 1993 | With friends Jenny and Meagan from the Bay Area. Honey Bear Donuts was always a big hit. KC loved the maple bars!
Practicing the art of docking an airplane? | A fun year! Kathryn joined Brownies, loved skiing, sledding, baseball and soccer. Her class was huge - something like 30+ kids. 1993 was a pretty decent snow season. Living up in Sierra View added to the snow pleasure.
Nothing better than being a flower girl in your sister's wedding! Patti and Mac Hamel got married on a glorious fall afternoon in El Dorado, CA. on September 26, 1993. We all had a splendid time. Bob, KC and I spent the entire weekend in Placerville, getting ready for the wedding. The wedding venue was "venue only" so we had the food catered and did the decorations and much of the set up and take down ourselves. We had a great time! It was so much fun with our family all weekend. Our friends, Debbie and Dutch Hofmeister helped enormously. We loved meeting the Hamel family. Patti chose well: Mac is a loving husband and amazing dad. They have been blessed with wonderful daughter Mackenzie, and son Andrew. | Patti and Mac September 26, 1993
Love is looking into someone's eyes and seeing yourself perfect for the first time in your life.
Another wedding! In the winter of 1994 we traveled to Seattle for cousin Jennifer's wedding. (Jennifer Ritchie) Kathryn was a flower girl. She absolutely loved her green velvet dress. An interesting connection is that Jennifer's wedding dress was Claire Epstein Friedman's, Kathryn's namesake.
1994 ...a tough year. In March, right before KC's 8th birthday, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Luckily we all made it through that year pretty darn well. Patti and Mac were wonderful to me. I spent 4 nights a week at their house during radiation treatments. I went home to Arnold on weekends. KC came with me to many of the treatments and enjoyed Patti and Mac's hospitality. | KC and Lexie, (Patti and Mac's new puppy). KC loved to drive Lexie around in the dolly carriage. This was a warm summer evening after radiation treatment at the Hamel home - probably the very end of June 1994.
I love this! While we were honest with Kathryn about breast cancer, we didn't want too much worry or impact on her. Once I had to cancel a follow up appointment at the cancer center, and KC was truly bummed. She said, "Mommy ... I LOVE the cancer center!." Bob and I knew then that we'd probably achieved our goal.
First day of 3rd grade | School lunch with friend Tessa Bunge | A new look! The long hair gave way to a fresh new cut right before 3rd grade. Styling Kathryn!
KC and Jenny at Bear Valley Lodge December 1994 | With cousin Chavis on Camano Island | Ready for skiing, sledding or playing in the snow
1995 - 1996 | I am gentle and I am shy, I wonder how many stars are in the sky, I hear donuts calling in the night, I see sprinkles of delight, I want everything I can buy, I am gentle and I am shy. I pretend to be a teacher, I feel sometimes like a Mesozoic creature, I touch a pool which is nice and cool, I worry about school, I cry when poked in the eye, I am gentle and I am shy. I understand about science, I say, "Go Go Giants!" I dream I live in a big house Quiet as a mouse, I hope I won't die, I am gentle and I am shy
Avery Middle School Avery, California September 1997 - June 2000 | KC loved AMS. She played basketball, softball, ran cross country, skied, tried snowboarding, continued with Girl Scouts, played the clarinet and piano. It was a busy time! In 8th grade she decided to take a leadership class, and was elected President of the student body. That was a very enriching and educational experience. She had many friends and was a delightful middle schooler. We hosted several parties at our new house on Thunderbolt Trail - lots of fun!!
6th Grade ~ Mrs. Gano Mrs. Gano for homeroom (English, History, Reading, Art) was definitely different. Lots and lots of homework, but she was also quirky and fun. She loved having KC in class. Mrs. Devaney taught Science and Math, which were KC's favorite subjects. It was her first time using a science lab and she loved it. The middle school was fresh and new (built in 1995) with nice facilities. We moved from Sierra View to Thunderbolt Trail in March 1998. KC celebrated her 12th birthday at our new home.
7th Grade - Mr. Boucke Mr. Boucke was a huge challenge for KC. He is a super nice person and a good teacher, but very loosely organized and unstructured. She'd never been in a class like that;it was definitely an uncomfortable style. One day she came home from school and exclaimed that Mr. Boucke said to the class, "What shall we do today?" She was flabbergasted that the teacher wouldn't have any idea what to do. We thought it was good for her to experience Mr. Boucke's unorthodox style. She did well, but she was always a tad skeptical. By 7th grade, softball pitching was a big passion, and that spring played in the rec league "Avalanche" where they kicked some serious ass.
 Our wonderful Teachers.
