What Is Geography? Geography is the study of the Earth and of the things that live on it, including us. There are many fields of geography. The people who study geography are called geographers.

Element 1 The World In Spatial Terms Spatial relations means how people, places, and things are connected because of location. Absolute location means the exact place of something. Relative location describes a place's location.

Element 2 Places and Regions A place is a point on the Earth that has meaning. A region is a group of places that are alike.

Element 3 Physical Systems Physical systems are things that shape the surface of the Earth. Some physical systems are volcanoes, floods, and hurricanes.

Element 4 Human Systems How we affect the Earth. Some ways we affect the earth are by settling it, building cities, and migrating, or moving.

Element 5 Environment and Society Environment is the area around us. It can have mountains, forests, and/or deserts, which can stop people from moving. We can change the environment by cutting down/ planting trees, building cities, and hunting. The environment can also affect where and how our societies are built and their culture.

Element 6 The Uses of Geography Geography tells us about the earth's physical features, living things, and human systems. Geography can and will help us plan out the future and its needs.
