February 16,1822 My name be Elijah Freeman. I’d be eleven years old. I live in Buxton. Buxton be a settlement for slaves that got free. Buxton be located in Canada. In Buxton I have one ma and one pa. They be really good parents. Sadly they were not born free like I was. I have no siblings atall. The only place that has white people that are nice is Chatham and I go there sometimes. | Journal Entry #1

February 23,1822 Today my friend Cooter came runin’ up to me.He be try’n to talk to me but he just kept on jabbering. Finally he be sayin’ that there be some animal tracks and that he don’t know what animal the tracks belonged to.This be a surprise to me. Cooter be the best at finding out what animal the tracks belonged to. So we went to the animal tracks. The tracks be circular. Then the preacher came over to us. When he saw the tracks he said “Oh,no! These be hoop snake tracks.” Then I said “What are hoop snakes.” The preacher said that if you get bit by one of them hoop snakes you blow up and then starve to death. Next the preacher said “Elijah, promise me that if I were to get bitten by one of them hoop snakes that you would put a bullet in my head before I blow up.”Then basically I ran faster than the fastest horse ever and nearly blew up from screaming. I went home and my ma said “Boy what the heck is wrong with you is is it cuz you too darn fra-gile.” I told my ma about everything that just happened and she said “boy you can’t die twice and there is no such thing as a hoop snake!” | Journal Entry #2

February 26,1822 On the first day that the settlement of Buxton was open,We had a parade. In the parade there be three important people. I was one of the three important people. I be one of the three important people because I was the first child born free in Buxton. So anyway another one of the three important people started talking and throwin me in the air. Then I sort of threwed up some chunks all over him. Then my ma came up and aimed my throw up out the window. This event will stick with me for the rest of my natural born life. | Journal Entry #3

March 7,1822 Today after school My pa sent me to Chatham to get the mail. When I got there the post office was closed and the sign on the door said that if I wanted to see the mail man I would have to go to the dry goods store. I went to the dry goods store and the man got me the mail. There waren’t a lot of mail. But there be a letter that caught my eye. The letter was to Mrs.Holton from America! This be really bad! This letter could say that Mrs.Holton’s husband could have died in slavery. So I got my ma and some other ladies and brought food to Mrs.Holton’s house. Then I read the letter to Mrs.Holton and it did say that her husband died in slavery. Then Mrs.Holton didn’t even cry but said “let’s eat.” | Journal Entry #4

March 16,1822 Today I decided to sneak around. Then right when I was in the good part of sneaking around someone came up and grabbed me. That person be Mr.Leroy. Mr.Leroy darn kidnapped me. Then Mr.Leroy stopped dragging me and said that we were gonna have to get his money back from the preacher. We went to America. First we thanked a man for saving our friend. Then when we were leaving the man that we thanked Mr.Leroy fell off the horse. I got off the horse and Mr.Leroy was goin’ crazy. Then a thick red liquid came out of his mouth and nose. I knowed he was dead. Then I went to the stable that the preacher was at. He was dead. Then I saw six people that were about to go back to slavery. They were all chained up except for the baby. I went to get help to get those slaves out of there. The people that I thought would help wouldn’t help. So I went back to the slaves and asked if I could take the baby to Buxton. They said yes and that was the last time I would see them. Then I took the baby to freedom but I did that the right way. | Journal Entry #5

If I could meet the main character I would ask him how the baby was doing. Then I would ask if they had a proper funeral for Mr.Leroy. Next I would ask if he could chunk some stones for me. I would ask him that because he can chunk stones really well. This is what I would do if I could meet the main character. | Journal Entry #6
