Entry 1 | Dear Diary, Have you ever had to move because your father died, your house caught fire because your uncle wanted to marry your mom, for the money? Well my name is Esperanza and I was born in Aquascalientes,Mexico. My Papa died the night before my 13th birthday. It was the most awful birthday ever! It doesn’t get much better, when Mama, Alfonso, Miguel, Hortensia, Senor Rodriquez, and me decide to escape Tio Luis because he was going to marry Mama. So, we bump along this filthy train full of peasants, I didn’t know why we were on “this” train. We meet this kind lady ,Carmen, who gave us two hens. After we finally got of the train, I burned up because it was so warm outside, when I hopped into a crowed car. Now I am stuck in this filthy cabin and having to work. Who knows how I’ll turn out. | By : karol m

Entry 2 | Dear Diary, Would you ever survive without a mama or papa? Well for me, my papa died so we moved to California and Mama is now gravely sick. Nothing is going as planned. In fact, I decided to earn money for Abuelita to come and nurse Mama. Mama got ill because there was a horrible dust storm that got dust in her lungs and made her very sick. I guess the main problem is that is that I might loose Mama, just like papa, and I don’t know how I’ll live. Well, I guess I just got to stay strong, pray, and hope for a miracle.

Entry 3 | Dear Diary, Do you any favorite memories? I do. I remember the day when my papa went outside, into the garden with me. With the warmth of the sun on my skin we stared at the plump, ripe, juicy grapes and our mouth’s watered. The best part was when we slowly pushed ourselves toward the dusty floor, papa whispered to listen for the earth’s soft heart beat. I was frustrated because I couldn’t hear it. Then, it hit me . I could hear the swift, soft beat of the earth. That was the most magical time of my life. | By : Fir0002

Entry 4 | Dear Diary, Have you ever had to take your mama’s place? I am. Since Mama is in the hospital. I never knew how hard it was. Every day, I wake up to find Hortensia and Josafina ready to go. I slip on my apron and braid my hair. Then, I’d eat and rush out the door to the truck that would pick and drop us off. When I would star working, I always would dream and hope of Mama and I, working together to someday, purchase a small house for Mama, Hortensia, Albuelita, and the others to live in. Oh ,but I just doubt it. I mean, I am working as hard as I can, but making so little money. If I keep working hard, I think it will all fit together, somehow.

Entry 5 | Dear Diary, “Good Morning,Esperanza!” Albuelita would tell me every morning. Her soft gentle voice floats to my ear which makes me awake. Now, every thing has fallen together. Miguel snuck Albuelita here and now we are all one big happy family, I guess you could say. Mama lays in the shade and nursed mama, she is now out of the hospital and recovering. Isabelle is going to school and getting good grades. We are all safe, I am still working in the sheds, it’s peach season, Isabelle’s favorite. Day after day I bring her a peach,to go along with her homework. Now that were are all together, we be thankful for everything, and every one. No wonder Esperanza mean “hope.”

Entry 6 | Dear Diary, Esperanza and I would be great friends. What would you do and ask Esperanza,if you could? I’d ask her if she could go back to the day when she left to go to the long train ride, would she? What is your favorite season to work in? Esperanza could almost be anyone's friend. I love her personality and who she really is. When I was down, I could use a friend like her, you can always count on her. If she came to the town, I would ask her if she’d like to eat out with me. There I could ask questions and find out more about her. When she’d have go back, I would miss her and hope to a have a friend like her, someday.
