FC: Getting to know me! | My name is Melissa Ross and I will be your instructor for SOC 2303 CRN 00000 Social Psychology. | The above picture is one of my characters from an on-line game that I play. Gaming and reading are my two main 'hobbies'.
My Education: Bachelor of Business Administration Master of Arts in Experimental Psychology Master of Science in Forensic Science-Technical Investigation | Courses I've taught at UCO: Sociological Research and Statistics I Social Problems Intro to Sociology Sexual Assault and Society Intimate Partner and Family Violence Social Psychology
I am many things. I'm a mom. I'm a wife. I'm a business owner. I'm an adjunct instructor. I'm a gamer. I'm a lifelong student. I'm an avid reader. I'm pet owner (though I hate that word, it's really not accurate). Above all else, I'm a fellow human being sharing this world with you.
Brandy and Mikayla | My children are AWESOME!
I can't leave out my furry children as well. Two dogs and a cat. Talula,Savannah, and Toledo.
This is a picture my youngest drew of her and her dad. | She drew these a couple of years ago.
Well, the hearts are a good thing right? and the smiles? I shouldn't be concerned that she depicts us a predators? | This is a picture my youngest drew of her and me.
This is the company my husband and I started in 1999. We've been growing a lot, and dealing with growing pains. It's not easy building a company from the ground up, by yourselves. It is however, definitely worth the effort!
This is the required textbook for this course! ISBN-13: 9780073370668 ISBN: 0073370665 Edition: 10th (if you buy an earlier edition, say 8th or 9th on the cheap, please keep in mind that examples, statistics, and the like are old. I know books are expensive, but you will need the textbook, old or new.)
Now here is where I will tell you about MY expectations for the class, and to let you know that I consider myself a "tough but fair" person. I am also laid back and try to find the humor in things. I'm also very blunt and sometimes my inner filter fails me. So here's my teaching philosophy: You are a grown-ass person and I'm not your mother! I am not going to read the textbook to you, or outline it for you and make power point slides for you. I expect that if you have been accepted by the University you have the ability to READ and to WRITE. I let you know what the course requirements are before class even begins. If you do not think you can fulfill those requirements, please drop my class NOW. I want discussion! I want student interaction! That's why I've always required attendance and made it count for 20% of the total course grade. This will not change with the on-line format.
Why I believe social psychology is the most interesting subject in the world to study: I think social psychology is up there with language and math as necessary subjects that everyone must at least have a rudimentary understanding of to succeed in life. Seriously, any topic or study that you can think of can be applied in some way to social psychology. Language, Literature, Humanities, Philosophy, History, Government, Politics, Religion, Biology, Medicine, Neuroscience, Cognition, Culture, Anthropology, Counseling, Business Administration, Social Problems, Criminology, Victimology, Parenting, Computer Science, Human Development, Marketing, Epistemology, Epidemiology, Networking, Attraction, Love, Law, ALL of these and so much more can be applied to social psychology and vice versa. Who wouldn't find that fascinating?
Giving full disclosure, I was diagnosed with MS about 3 years ago. This is one of the reasons I'm learning to teach on-line.
