FC: How We Came To The Spanish Inquisition

Visigoths ruled Spain for many years. Visigoths were part of the Roman Empire but were very disorganized people. Rulers didn't get along and often fought. It was the perfect opportunity for the Muslims to expand.

In 622, the Muslims started to expand. Through Africa and up to the strait of Gibraltar. They came from the Middle East.

The Muslim leader, the caliph, saw the disorganization of the Visigoths, he decided he wanted to make his area larger of control larger. This was his caliphate.

The caliph started to convert the people he conquered to the Muslim religion. Spain was Christian at this time and ruled by the Visigoths, but rulers didn't get along and so the Muslims attacked them in the year 711.

The Visigoths fought hard but were eventually beat out by the Muslims after several years of fighting. The Muslims encouraged the people to convert, but forced no one. Spain was full of different religions now.

For 500 years, Spain was officially part of the Muslim Empire, but ruled by the caliph who live far away. Muslims enjoyed art, music, architecture and other things, which then made their cities beautiful.

Muslims encouraged people to learn. They started the first University in Cairo in 971

Muslims were very tolerant of other religions. They vowed to respect and protect those of other religions. People were not ever punished for their other beliefs.

Eventually, by the early 1000s, the Muslim caliphate was shrinking and little states have broken off from the main empire. States were fighting. | But there were some Christian areas that saw the disruption and decided to help crumble the Muslim Empire. They set out to take Spain back for Christians.

The Christians fought the Muslims and named themselves the Reconquista,or the "re-conquest"

For 407 years, the Christians fought and gained ground over the Muslims. After 7 major battles they reclaimed almost all of Spain.

The Spanish created a new battle formation where they grouped into tight little groups and were hard to destroy. This helped them to win.

The Muslims viewed this as an aggressive attack, especially since they had treated the Christians fairly.

Eventually there was just one little area of Spain left. Grenada. By then, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand were in charge of Spain.

When the Reconquista succeeded, they at first allowed Muslims to live in Spain, if they converted to Catholicism.

They wouldn't make life easy for the Muslims. They started with a special tax on all Muslims. (Revenge because the Muslims did the same to the Christians and Jews) Eventually people started to lie about being Catholic and started to make Isabella and Ferdinand very unhappy, which started the Inquisition. The Inquisition was started to purge all non-Catholics from Spain.
