S: Our Immigration Story
FC: This is a picture of my family and I. My husband and my two children. We are originally from Italy. This is a picture of us on board a ferry from the docks to Ellis Island.
1: This is the farry we rode on all the way to Ellis Island. This picture to the left is a picture of my family and friends waiting for the farry to arrive. So many people were packed onto the farry. It was very crowded the whole way there.
2: The picture up top is the Identification cards that each arriving at Ellis Island had to have pinned to their shoulders. To the side this is my husbands work visa for his job.
3: These pictures are from when we were detained for a few days. That was nerve wracking thinking how long we were going to be there or if we were going to be released to the US. | This was my detention card.
4: We were drawn to the united states for many reasons. Some are because we wanted freedoms we couldn't have in Italy. We wanted freedom of religion. We had the dream of finding work. Which we would find in the United States. We wanted a better education for our children. It was a hard long struggle to get here. We shed many tears along the way but it was worth it in the end. We still do and probably forever will have hardships but we know now we can get through it.
5: This picture is of my husband and a friend at work. My husband is a shoe shiner. He supports our family while I stay home and take care of our two kids. Sometimes its difficult but we make it work. | This is or home. We lived here with one other family. This picture is of my daughter and I embroidering pieces for our home. It was a tad crowded in our home but we were appreciative we were here.
