2: John Steinbeck was born in Salinas California in 1902. John went to Stanford University in 1919 and left in 1925 without a degree. He then worked as a journalist in New York City while working on his first novel. During his lifetime, John wrote 27 books, and 2 plays. John wrote The Pearl in 1947. John Steinbeck died in 1968, six years after he won a Nobel Prize in 1962. | Author Summary
4: The Pearl's setting was in La Paz in the eighteenth century. La Paz was founded on May 3, 1535, but was originally named Santa Cruz. Then in 1596, Sebastian Vizcaino came to Santa Cruz and renamed La Paz. | La Paz

8: Chapter 1 Summary | While Kino is eating breakfast, he and Juana notice that there is a scorpion crawling down toward Coyotito. Not knowing what it is, Coyotito tries to play with it. The scorpion the falls in the box with Coyotito and stings him. Kino hits the scorpion and and kills it. Juana then tries to suck out all the poison out of Coyotito. Kino and Juana takes Coyotito to the doctor's house. The doctor refuses to see Coyotito because Kino and Juana don't have enough money for them. Then in anger Kino punches the gate and busts his hand open.
9: Chapter 2 Summary | Kino and Juana went out into the Gulf in Kion's canoe to look for a pearl. Kino thought he saw a pearl in a giant oyster, and gets the oyster and throws it into the boat. When Kino opened the oyster he found a giant pearl.
10: Chapter 3 Summary | The doctor comes to see Coyotito once he finds out that Kino found a pearl. The doctor said that the poison could still be inside Coyotito. The doctor gave Coyotito some "medicine" and said he would be back. The doctor came back and gave Coyotito some medicine that made him feel better. That night someone came inside the brush hut looking for the pearl. Kino jumped down to fight them, but got hurt instead.
11: Chapter 4 Summary | Kino and Juana go to take the pearl to the pearl buyers in the city. All they would offer Kino was 1500 pesos. Kino becomes angry and says he is going to take the pearl to the capital, and walks out of the building. That night again Kino is attacked and has a gash on his head from the attackers.
12: Chapter 5 Summary | Kino, Juana, and Coyotito get up early to go to the capital, and sell Kino's pearl. Kino's canoe has a hole in it, and he gets attacked again. This time Kino kills a man. Kino and Juana's house was set on fire though. Kino and Juana hide in Juan Tomas's house. After staying a night with Juan Tomas Kino, Juana, and Coyotito head off.
13: Chapter 6 Summary | After Kino, Juana, and Coyotito leave, they walked until the sun came up and then rested for awhile. Kino then realizes that three trackers are following them. To try and lose the trackers Kino and Juana go up into the mountains. The trackers go to sleep that night on the beach. Kino sneaks down the mountain to try and kill the trackers. One of the trackers hears Coyotito crying and shoots at it thinking it was a baby coyote. Kino then kills the three trackers, but finds out Coyotito is dead. Kino and Juana then return to La Paz and throw the pearl back into the ocean where it belongs.
14: Moral of The Pearl | I believe the moral of the story is to not let a worldly possession take control of your life. The Pearl took control of Kino's life, and got his son killed for it.
