2: John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California in 1902. In 1919 he went to Stanford University. He left in 1925 without taking a degree. he supported himself as a journalist for the next five years. A ceaseless experimenter through his career, Steinbeck changed courses regularly. In his lifetime, he wrote twenty six books. He died in 1968 after winning a Nobel Prize in 1962.

4: Setting | This story takes place in La Paz, Mexico. La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur. It was first inhabited by Neolithic hunter-gatherers. The time period of this story is around the 1940s.
6: Kino was the husband of Juana and father of Coyotio. | Kino | Juana | Juana is the mother of Coyotio and wife of Kino.
7: Juan Tomas | Kino's brother | Coyotio | Son of Kino and Juana.
8: In chapter one Coyotio was stung by a scorpion. Juana and Kino took the baby to the doctor, but he would not treat the scorpion bite because they did not have enough money. | Chapter 1
9: Kino went oyster diving so that he could pay the doctor for Coyotio's treatment. While gathering many small oysters, Kino saw a large one by itself. He took his time opening the large oyster because he thought what he saw was a mirage. | Chapter 2
10: Chapter 3 | Kino took the pearl home with him. After hearing Kino got a large pearl the priest said he would do Kino and Juana"s wedding. The doctor came by and said he would "help" Coyotio, but all he was did was make Coyotio worse.
11: Kino took the pear to the pearl buyers, but they "played too hard" trying to cheat kino out of money. He said that now he is going to the capital to sell the pearl. | Chapter 4
12: Juana tried to get rid of the pearl, but Kino stopped her before she could. Kino was attacked in the woods on his way home. Someone burnt down their brush house and all the neighbors thought they were dead. The same person made a hole in Kio's canoe. They hid in Juan Tomas' house until the next night. | Chapter 5
13: Chapter 6 | Kino and his family were being followed by trackers so they were forced to hide in the mountains. Coyotio began to cry and the trackers thought he was a coyote crying so the tracker shot him and he died. Kino killed th trackers that were following them. He and Juana went home and Kino threw the pearl into the ocean.
