2: John Steinbeck | John Steinbeck 1902-1968

3: John Steinbeck was born in 1902 and grew up in an agricultural valley near the coast. He attended Stanford University and enrolled in literature courses. He left without obtaining a degree. He supported himself as a Journalist in New Your City, while working n his first novel, Cup of Gold. He then published Pastures of Heaven (1932), To God Unknown (1933), The Long Valley (1938), and Tortilla Flat (1935). John changed courses regularly throughout his career. John became a filmmaker with The Forgotten Village (1941). After many more outstanding books and accomplishments Steinbeck spent the last decades of his life in New York City with his third wife. He died in 1968 after winning a Nobel Prize in 1962.

4: La Paz is a small rural town in Mexico along the coast. It is located on the lower half of the Baja Peninsula. The time period is set around the colonial era (1900s). La Paz was founded by the Spanish, who form the educated uper-class.It was started as a commercial city. It relied on the main gold and silver route to the coast. The Spaniards took the gold mines away from the indians and made them slaves.

6: Kino: Kino is the husband of Juanna and father of Coyotito.

7: Juanna: Juanna is the wife of Kino, and she is the mother of Coyotito.

8: Coyotito is the son of Juanna and Kino.

9: Juan Tomas is Kino's brother.

10: Chapter One: This chapter introduces kino, Coyotito, Juanna, and the doctor. Early one morning Coyotito was stung by a scorpion. His family and neighbors took the baby to the doctor, but the doctor refused to help.

11: Chapter Two: The family takes the canoe to go pearl hunting. Kino thought he saw a pearl in an enormous pearl, and he brings it to the surface. When he opened the oyster, he found the Pearl of the World. Then coyotito's swelling goes down, and the poison is receding.

12: Chapter Three: Kino made plans towards what his pearl will pay for. The docotr came by and suposidly healed the baby. Then late at night a stranger came in the house and injured Kino.

13: Chapter Four: Everyone went with Kino to sell his pearl. The pearl buyers tryed to cheat Kino, but he knew better. He stormed out angry and said he was going to the capital. Another man attacked Kino, and Juanna says the pearl will destroy them.

14: Chapter Five: Juanna tried to throw the pearl inot the ocean, but Kino attacked her and got it back. After that, Kino was attacked and killed his attacker. When he went back to the village, he saw his hut burning to the ground. The family hides because Kino is now a murderer. The family then leaves while everyone in the village think they are dead.

15: Chapter Dix: The family left and soon saw that they were being followed by trackers. They ran into the mountains. When the trackers caught up to the family, Kino prepared to attack them. Right when he was about to attack, Coyotito cried. The trackers shot Coyotito thinking he was a coyote. The family returned to the village and threw the pearl into the ocean.
