Ordinary World Sam Monroe is a sixteen year old high school student who couldn't care less about what he does with his life. He comes off as a very depressed and negative person and wakes up in the morning for school, gets high and tries to hang himself in his closet. His mom has pretty much given up trying to help him and doesn't know what to do.
Call To Adventure Sam's dad, George, comes to pick him up and tell him that he is living with him for the summer. Robin, Sam's mom, warns George that he isn't going to be happy about it because he already had plans to go to a friends cabin for the summer. George yells at him that he has no choice and there is no way he will let him hang out with his friends just so he can pretty much self destruct for the summer.
Refusal of the Call The suitcase is thrown from Sam's window down to the pool and he tells his dad off. His mom sort of defends him but she still knows it would be good for him. George grabs his bags and pulls him into the car. On the way to the house, George tells Sam that they are going to spend time together whether he likes it or not.
Meeting with the Mentor George slowly becomes Sam's mentor even though Sam wants nothing to do with him at first. George has lived a very unhappy life and doesn't want his son going down the same road. He takes all of Sam's pills he is hiding in his sock drawer and tells him to take out his piercings and help him with the house to be productive..
Crossing the First Threshold Sam rebelled right away towards his father and was very upset his drugs were taken away. He did anything he could to get more pills but without a job, he had to exchanged sex for drugs. When the cops came during his "exchange", he ran and got away but it took a toll on him and he realized that what he did isn't something he can continue to do. He noticed how drugs have taken over his life.
Test, Allies, Enemies Sam's test throughout the movie was to straighten out his life and do something good for himself like helping George build the house. He hits a point when he realizes that he needs to get past his enemy, his bad drug habits, but also comes to find out he has allies that help him along the way like his dad, mom and younger brother. Sam also started to fall for the neighbor girl who ends up helping him fix his ways of life.
Approach Allysa is George's neighbor who is the same age as Sam. They hit it off pretty well and Sam has started to build serious feelings for her. The only problem is that Allysa has a boyfriend, Josh. What Sam finds out though is that Josh has been cheating on Allysa with her mom. He doesn't know if it would be the right thing to tell her or not.
Ordeal Sam finds out that his dad has terminal cancer and that is why he wanted him to live with him for the summer. Sam took this very hard because he felt like his dad just wanted him to start to love him just as he was about to die. This is the moment when you think he is going to relapse and resort back to drugs but he has become a better person and instead went to Allysa with his problems.
Reward Sam comes to realize that George is not going to survive. His step brothers have become very close to George and that is what helped Sam realize that the boys need someone to look up to because their dad is never around and isn't the best father figure. Same needs to step it up and continue with the house no matter what happens. He needs to become the "man of the house" and a role model for his brothers.
The Road Back Sam gets all the neighbors to come together and get this house finished before his dad dies, despite the drama and differences going on between everyone. He deals with people from the city telling him he cannot continue building the house without the proper permit. That doesn't stop Sam from doing anything. He stays strong and does what he has to do to get the house done so that his dad can see the finished product.
Resurrection George dies in the hospital after getting the chance to say goodbye to everyone. One of the last things he got to see was the finished house through the window in his hospital room window. He was so happy and proud of how for Sam had come and thanked him for finishing it because he needed him to continue with the plan he had in mind.
Return with Elixer Sam did what his dad wanted done with the house. He found the young girl who was paralyzed from the car accident caused by his drunk grandfather. Both her mom and dad were killed in the crash and she was put in a house that was not suitable for her needs. Sam explained why they built the house and that it was for her. It was an apology from their family and an experience for Sam to become what his dad knew he could be; happy.
