FC: Lunar Moth

Lunar Moths are usually found in the eastern part of the United States and into Canada. They are nocturnal which means they only fly at night and that is how they got their name, the word "luna" means moon.

Their wings are light green with yellow stripes that have a long wing tail. Their wingspan is about 5 inches long and 4 inches wide. They are one of the largest moths in North America.

As a caterpillar, they eat hickory, sycamore and walnut leaves. They do not have a mouths and do not eat as adults.

They go through the process of metamorphosis from egg to caterpillar to pupa (cocoon), and then to adult.

Camaren did his research! We were all so impressed with his knowledgeable presentation!

Thank you so much for sharing this rare experience with us! You rock, Camaren!!
