My name's Mayella Ewell, an' 'm 19 years old. I live 'n the back of the woods of Maycomb County. I have seven younger siblings that I take care of during the day. My mom passed away when I was younger, and my dad tries to support us.
There is a garden outside of our house that I love to spend time working on. It helps me get away from my siblings because most of my time is spent taking care of them. I also spend a lot of time doing chores around the house. I do not go to town much, so I do not really know anyone other than my family.
Bob Ewell is my father and an important person in my life because I have no mother. He can be hard on me sometimes, but that's just because I am the oldest. He is gone a lot from the house claiming he is working, but I just think he's getting drunk. | DAD
TOM | Tom Robinson passes our house every day to go to his work. There have been quite a few times where I have stopped him to help me with jobs around the house. He is a nice man to help me. One day I wanted to thank him for helping me, so I tried to give him a kiss. When my dad came home and saw us, I blamed Tom for everything.
The day that my dad saw me kiss Tom was the day everything went wrong. my father ran inside and when I turned around, Tom was gone. My father ran toward me and started beating me harder than he usually does after drinking. That was the worst beating I had ever gotten.
After my dad had beaten me, Sheriff Tate came and saw that I was hurt. When he asked what happened, I had to cover up the fact that my dad had beaten me, so I just said that Tom raped me. Tate had Tom arrested and the case was taken to court. Atticus Finch was Tom's lawyer, and I know the judge said he was just being polite, but I think that Atticus was making fun of me and | acting like he was better than me. The only reason I was defending my father was because he is the only parent left for my younger siblings. I know we won the case, but everyone knew my dad was guilty. Atticus made a fool of him to everyone in town which is what he deserved.
This is the tin watering can that I use to water the red geraniums I have in a garden by my house. Gardening is really important to me because it helps me get away from the stress of chores. The flowers always make me feel happy.
Since my dad is gone all the time, I have to do a lot of chores around the house. I have to cook for my brothers and sisters. I try to keep the house clean.
"My paw's never touched a hair o'my head in my life," she declared firmly. "He never touched me" (Lee 184)
