FC: Lights! Cameras! Learning! | MICCA Grant Project 2009 Selena Ward
The MICCA grant gave me the opportunity to take my technology integration class in a new direction. I utilized the money to purchase four Kodak pocket video cameras.
I knew what I wanted as a final product, I now had the equipment, but had never taught filmmaking before. Then I remembered my experiences at the Discovery Educator Network National Insitute. We the opportunity to create a short film that was part of the AFI screen education curriculum. I realized that curriculum would be my guide. I downloaded the guide from DE Streaming, watched all of the videos available, and felt ready to begin. This would be a learning opportunity for the students and the teacher.
Every video project began with the script. In every case the script that had more detail resulted in better use of recording time. Students worked well in groups and everyone had input.
 It's all in the Script!
The Door Scene | As part of the AFI curriculum, students began their film-making adventure with the door scene. In the door scene, one actor hears a sound and struggles to open a door. Finally the actor gets the door open and shows relief. This task was done a few times with different twists to allow students to practice scripts, storyboarding, camera angles, and editing.
