THEME The universal affirmation of man's ability to accomplish great feats by using a great deal of brain power and a tremendous amount of effort even in the face of great adversity. In the novel 3 Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Relin, the main character Greg Mortenson wants us to know is that there is always hope, even in the most seemingly hopeless of all times. -Victor

Page 23: Example 1 Moving to a whole new country, Greg's family finds it hard to settle in. There are bullies that bully Greg at school because he is from Africa, but unlike them, he isn't African. Also, Greg is always late because he isn't used to the constant rush to get things done in America. The general pace of everything is much quicker than in Africa. Greg overcomes those problems by studying hard, quickening his pace, and trying to please everyone. Greg also has to work in the army to pay for his college since his family can't afford it. Greg becomes a nurse.

Page 47: Example 2 Greg tried to build a school, but he had to build a bridge first, he just realized. His one and only sponsor, Jean Hoerni, sent him ten thousand dollars to build what he expected would be a school. Also, Greg lost his house, his job, and his girlfriend trying to help the girls of Pakistan get an education. All seems hopeless until a friend contacts Greg and tells him to call his sponsor back and ask him for some more money. Greg calls. Later, Greg finds another girlfriend, one more supportive, and marries her six days later. -Victor

VIEW OF CULTURAL/ETHNIC GROUP What did you learn from the novel about this cultural or ethnic group during this time period? I learned that even thought the people of Pakistan live in a war country, they can be very nice people. They also are very greatful for what they have, even though they don't have much. -Nicole I learned that Pakistan is not all poor and that the people of Pakistan have a good amount of money. I learned that The taliban did not just effect Afghanistan, but it effected the boarding countries. - Lea

I learned that haste is not always the best way to achieve tasks. In the end, the task will be done, weather more effort is put into it or not. I used to think that schools are every leader's priority of a country. I learned that Pakistan is so large, the government can't build schools for all the villages, meaning that some of them don't have schools. - Victor I learned that sometime people can be nicer than they look. I also learned that Indian people are ruled by a strong person. - Rayna -Nicole

How did your view of this cultural or ethnic group change as a result of reading this novel? I used to think that the people of Pakistan we sad because they had had barely had any money, but after reading this book I noticed that they are grateful for what they have. I also thought they were not educated because they had know schools, but aster reading this book i realized that they are actually really smart. -Nicole I used to think that Indians were mostly mean, now I now that some are very kind like the villagers in Korphe. I also used to think that kindness doesn't pay off, and this book gives great examples of when kindness pays off. For example Greg got famous for building one school. -Rayna

I used to think that Pakistan was a scary place and that the people there were bad, but I now know that they are very nice. I also used to think that the kids did not suffer, but when I heard of that one girl who lost her sister to a bomb I felt bad. -Lea -Nicole
