Teams of professionals travel the country and administer tests to school children that are both written and hands on. The results of these tests result in the rankings of states.

After ranking near the bottom of the country in math, Tom Horne made a decision to overhaul our math standards and the math AIMS test.

The new standards, and next years AIMS test, will be aligned closer to the framework set out by the NAEP.

The new AIMS test will have many more "reading" based questions. These questions are still multiple choice, but they ask the student to justify the reasonableness of their answer.

The standards and questions are based on the higher level of Bloom's Taxonomy which means that AIMS will no longer be a 50/50. The questions created are based on what type of attitude a student has in analyzing the question.

There will be less individual questions and situations where there is one scenario with multiple questions attached (similar to Terra Nova).

To get a better idea of where Arizona ranks against the rest of the country, as well as to get some great resources to help you prepare, the NAEP has a website: http://nces.ed.gov/NATIONSREPORTCARD/
