5: African Americans On The Trail | Rose Jackson Rose Jackson was smuggled into Oregon. She hid in a wooden box for the entire journey. She only got out of the box at night to stretch and get fresh air. | This is a picture of her husband.

7: Hardships | Women's Duties Women on the trail were in charge of different routines in camp, just as they were at home. The chores they had to do was making soap, tending the garden, cooking, cleaning, mending clothes, and minding the little ones.

8: Weather | Over half dozen emigrants were killed by lightning strikes. Others where injured by hail the size of apples.

9: Diseases

10: Cholera | Sometimes an emigrant would be healthy and within a few hours they would be dead. Mostly, the dead got a proper burial, but often the ill got left on the side of the trail in their beds.

11: Jumping off Cities The Missouri River heads west, so most emigrants had to load their wagons onto steamships. On the Oregon Trail Independence, MO, was the first option for setting off.

12: Jobs and Chores Women had to do on the Trail. Jobs women had to do are listed below. 1. Making Soap 2.Tending the Garden 3.Cooking 4.Cleaning 5.Mending Clothes | 6.Minding the kids 7.Make sure that the butter churn was hanging from the back of the wagon so that they had butter for dinner. 8.Tending for sick or injured people. 9.Bulid the Camp 10.Make fires
