FC: The Planets in our Solar System
The Sun Our sun is a star located in the center of our solar system. All of the planets in our solar system orbit around the sun. The sun's surface is called the photosphere and has a temperature of 5800 K. It is so large, you can fit 1,000,000 earths into it!
Mercury I am the closest planet to the sun. I am small and rocky, much like Earth;s moon! Unlike most planets in our solar system, I have no moons. I am the smallest planet in our solar system!
Venus I am the second closest planet to the sun and I am the hottest planet in the solar system at 400 degrees Celsius! I also do not have any moons.
Earth I am the 3rd planet from the sun. 71% of my surface is covered with water. I have the densest major body in our solar system. I am the only planet where life is known to exist.
Mars I am the 4th planet from the sun. I have ice-caps at both poles, made mainly from carbon dioxide. I have 2 tiny moons that orbit close to my surface.
Jupiter I am the 5th planet from the sun and the largest of all the planets. I have a total of 16 moons! I do not have a solid surface due to my gas composition. I have high winds that whip at more than 400 mph.
Saturn I am the 6th planet from the sun and the 2nd largest. I am known for my distinct ring system surrounding my planet.
Uranus I am the 7th planet from the sun, and the 3rd largest in our solar system. I am blue in color, which is due to the gas methane located in my upper atmosphere.
Neptune I am the 8th, and farthest planet from the sun. My winds are the fastest in our solar system, reaching 2,000 kilometers per hour.
