S: Peck Family Album
Peck Family Album | By Mitch Lehman
Pinky | Pinky is a female pig who lives with the Pecks in the hills of Vermont. Pinky was given to Robert as a gift for helping Mr. Tanner's cow Apron give birth. Robert named her Pinky because of her pink nose and pink skin. This is the fist thing Robert has ever had that was his and he makes this clear and so does Pinky when he and Pinky say " At that the pig and I both gave a squeal. She was mine, mine, mine, mine, mine!" Pinky's first memories with Robert include sleeping together in the corn cratch, making a flutter wheel, and finding butternuts. Robert wants Pinky to grow up to be a mother pig and have babies so they can make money to fund their farm. But when Papa tells him that Pinky might be barren he is heartbroken. He knows that if an animal cannot have babies then they have to make it into meat. Pinky is bred by Mr. Tanner's boar Samson twice but she never has babies. Then one cold morning of the first snow Robert and Papa Kill her. Robert didn't want to kill her and it says "I hated Papa that moment. I hated him for killing Pinky," I knew he meant it with all his heart but he still loves his Papa. | Simile Pinky was as barren as the Sahara Desert. | Hyperbole Pinky was as pink as a cotton candy. | Sense Imagry Pinky was smelled like manure after she rolled in the mud.
Robert | Robert is a 13 year old boy living in Vermont. His family lives by the book of Shaker. Although they are not true Shakers they still believe in doing things quickly and efficiently. Robert wears clothes that his mom makes for him but he wants " A red and black buffalo plaid checkerboard coat, just like Jacob Henry's,". I think that he wants a store-bought coat because everybody has one and he will fit in better. Robert loves his pet Pinky, who he got as a gift from Mr. Tanner as a thank you for helping his cow, Apron, give birth. Robert takes Pinky to the fair and they win a blue ribbon for best behaved pig. It is really tough for Robert when they have to kill Pinky because he has to help his father kill her. But Robert needs to make the transition into manhood because he will have to run the farm one day. | Hyperbole Robert was more afraid of Aunt Matty than he was of ghosts. | Simile Robert is as bruised as the apples on the ground. | Sense Imagery When Robert looked into the stands at the fair all he saw was a huge wave of people
Mama | Mama is a mother to three girls who have moved away and one living son Robert. Her other two sons died at an early age. Mama stays at home and makes clothes for Robert and other family members. Mama also prepares food and stores food for the winter. Mama knows when Robert is upset and she knows how to make him feel better. After Robert finds out that Pinky is barren he gets very upset. So Mama calls to Robert and says "Go get a squirrel," I think that this shows that Mama knows that squirrel hunting always cheers Robert up. Mama also loves Robert lots and when he rips his pants trying to give birth to Aprons calves Mama says "I'm preferenced to mend busted pants than a busted boy," and that shows that Mama is happy that Robert is all in one piece. Mama is a good mother to Robert and she has raised him to be a good mannered boy. | Sense imagery When Mama touched Robert her skin was as soft as a cloud | Hyperbole Mama was as nice as the stars at night. | Simile Mama was as sweet as candy.
Papa | Papa works as a pig slaughterer for a living and his job ties into the title of this book. Papa is the loving father of Robert and is helping Robert to get to manhood before he passes. Papa is a hardworking man and he goes to work almost everyday I know this because Robert says "Papa's so sturdy he's never missed a day of slaughtering in his life". He teaches Robert by example and he has Robert do some things on the farm with him so Robert can learn how to do them. Papa doesn't like his job but he does it because he has to pay off his loans from the bank that he used to purchase his farm. He tells Robert that he is sick and that Robert has to become a man and take over the farm. Papa wanted to write his name really badly but he couldn't because he hadn't had any schooling when he was young. Papa dies on the 3rd of May in his sleep. The title of the story ties into papa and his job because Robert says "There would be no work on this day. It would be a day no pigs would die" I think he says this because all of the men who were pig slaughterers with his dad were at his funeral. | Simile Papa was as sturdy as scaffolding. | Hyperbole Papa was as healthy as a horse. | Sense Imagery Papa's hands were as soft as Mama's when he touched my face.
