FC: Raping Of Nanking | By: Sam Reyes and Stephanie Gagne

The Rape of Nanking took place in the city of Nanjing. For 6 weeks in the year 1937

Around 20,000-80,000 women were raped by the soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army. | Hundreds of thousands were killed, there is no set evidence of how many were killed due to the geography and time factors. | The picture on the top left shows a ditch of dead bodies, while the picture on the bottom right shows the Japanese entering Nanking

The children of Nanking in the 1900's were raised to hate China, which was one the the causes of this Genocide. When the Japanese entered Nanking they would round up the young and old men and random civilians shoot them in the head without mercy.

This picture is an example of a baby being orphaned during the genocide

During the genocide Japanese officials would tie men, women and children in barb wire and burn them alive for entertainment. They also used people for bayonet practice for the soldiers.

Young attractive women would be taken with men on their journey to other villages, as sexual slaves to suffer repeated brutal rape on a daily basis. Once they were to diseased or no longer of good to their purpose they were to be killed along the road side and left there..

Mothers, grandmothers and little girls were raped then ordered to be burned to death.

Anyone who would speak out against the soldiers would be publicly tortured and their dead corpses would be left out for everyone to see.

 - Economy Broken - City Destroyed - Cleaning up the city (bodies) - Hatred for the Japanese | - Families Destroyed - Rebuilding Lives -Debt

The most responsible for the Nanking Genocide, was the Japanese High Command. This includes the Emperor Hirohito. Hirohito Uncle was the one who issued the order to "Kill all captives" which was the main key point to the hatred against the Nanking men. | The Japanese soldiers would take any men prisoner and refuse to give them food or water. They would promise them food and work. After such days like these, they would take the prisoners and bind their wrists securely and take them to an isolated area.

Iris Chang was an American historian and journalist. She is best known for her best selling 1997 account of the Nanking Massacre , The Rape of Nanking.

Contemporary Significance | The significance in learning about the Rape of Nanking exposes the reality of other genocides besides the, most known genocide, the Holocaust. Learning about the suffering and mass murder that happened in Najing in 1937 ensures people to never make those mistakes again and to grow shameful of historic events like that. By seeing the horrible consequences people suffered and recognizing the stories of everyone it affected, will show us today that, if for any reason something happening like that would happen again, the world will be able to identify the wrongs with those ideas through the comparisons of the similarities brought upon by other genocides.

This Zhang Xiuhong. An 11 year old girl during the Rape of Nanking. | This is one of the hundreds of thousands stories from the lives of the Rape of Nanking, These are some quotes from Zhang Xiuhong from an interview about the event.

“I really, really hate the Japanese. I was raped when I was 11-years-old. I tried to commit suicide three times afterwards,” -Zhang Xiuhong | “I’ve repeated this thousands of times. This was in February 1938. I pretended to be dead so the soldier would go away,” -Zhang Xiuhong

The Nanking Massacre displaced thousands. Once the government was finally able to step in and rebuild the city the population grew to 700,000 which is generally two-thirds of the postwar population.

After the genocide many trials took place. 4,400 Japanese were convicted, about 1,000 were sentence to death. The largest trial was 93 Japanese personnel charged with the summary of execution of more then 300 allied POWS.
