Once upon a time a young princess, Scarlet, lived with her parents, Snow White and King William. They lived in a palace as enormous as the moon. The castle was surrounded by outlying villages and a dark, mysterious forest.
One cold and snowy morning the happy family was sitting down to a lovely breakfast of porridge and fresh fruit. “Momma, can I go into the woods today?” Scarlet politely asked her mother. Even though Scarlet was only nine, Snow White knew the guards would look after her while she was in the woods. Snow White replied, “Of course, as long as you don’t go past the three boulders covered in moss as green as an overripe cucumber.”
Snow White and Scarlet walked to the gleaming gate together and Snow White told the guards that Scarlet could go into the woods. Scarlet started running the second the guards opened the gate and soon became very tired. The heavy huff of Scarlet’s breath was the only sound in the lush, green woods. As Scarlet ran, she didn’t notice she had run past the three boulders covered in moss.
As Scarlet was running a shiny gleam caught her eye, and she went to investigate. She had found a mirror! The mirror was trimmed in gold and silver and looked as if it had been polished recently. It looked like an ordinary mirror to Scarlet, so she ran back to the castle and told no one about the mirror she had discovered.
On the next day, Scarlet went back out into the forest and ran past the three boulders again. The mirror was in the same spot, so Scarlet ran back to the castle.
On the third morning Scarlet snuck out of the castle because her mother was sleeping late and Scarlet was anxious to get into the woods. She ran past the three boulders and found the mirror. This time there was a face in the mirror. It spoke to Scarlet. “Hello,” it said. “I am the former queen’s magic mirror and I need a favor.”
The mirror told Scarlet to complete her job and it was simple. Find the broken old tower that is even further past the three boulders and retrieve the journal that was inside the tower. Then, return it to me, the Magic Mirror.
When Scarlet found the tower, she stepped inside. The ceiling was laced with cobwebs, the windows were shattered, and the only surviving furniture was a lone desk with a journal lying atop of it. Scarlet quickly snatched the journal and sprinted out of the tower and back to the mirror. She set the journal down in front of the mirror and it started laughing evilly. “You've freed me! I really am the queen. I have once again cheated death. Your mother thought I was crushed by one of the three boulders, but she was wrong! I hid in my mirror and now you have freed me!” screamed the queen. Without hesitation, Scarlet turned and ran as fast as she could.
“I’m lost,” Scarlet moaned after she had been running for a while. “I should have listened to my mother,” she said as she sat down and drifted off into a miserable sleep. The next morning Scarlet awoke and kept running in a line until she saw the outline of the castle in the distance.
Scarlet ran all the way to the castle and told her mother everything. “I hope you learned your lesson,” said Snow White. “I did,” said Scarlet. “From now on I will always listen to my parents.” Scarlet and her family lived happily ever after, and Scarlet never ran off alone again!
