Table of Contents My Name My Neighborhood Life In Northeastern Ohio My Favorite Holiday Memory The Big Game Dedication: I dedicate this book to my mom because without the sacrifices she has made, I might never have lived in the house I call home. | . | Table of Contents/ Dedication

My Name My name is Samuel John. Samuel means “the word of God or spoken by God,” and John means “God is Gracious” from Hebrew. Samuel was not the name my mom and dad had decided on before I was born. They had a different name in mind which was Sebastian. They chose this name because the Dutch name for Sebastian is Bas, which they both liked. My dad took one look at me after I was born and decided I did not look like a Sebastian. He felt I looked more like a Samuel. My mom agreed with my dad, so that is how I came to be Samuel instead of Sebastian. Before I was born my dad wanted my first name to be John, but my mom did not. John in Dutch doesen't sound very good, but my mom wanted to honor her dad. The name John is a translation for Johannes, which is my Opa (granddad) Rien’s name in Dutch. So my parents kept Samuel as my first name and John as my middle name. Sometimes when I am curious about my name, I will go and ask my parents some questions about my name. Normally I would ask why was i named Samuel and not another name. My parents would say to me that when i was born that was what I looked like, I looked like a Samuel. My grandpa on my dad’s side told me that there have been a lot of Samuel’s in the family. There have been many who have fought in Revolutionary War, and many in the Civil War. There have been at least seven Samuel’s in the family. Sometimes I here my name from my mom or dad like they are calling me. Instead it is the walls and it is as God is guiding me I am very proud of my name because it honors both my dad and my mom’s family.

My Neighborhood | I really love living in my neighborhood, and there are many things that are great about it. I have been living in my neighborhood since I was born, fourteen years. It is a fun place to live and there are so many wonderful things you can do here. When I was little I would go up to a baseball field close to our house with my dad. He would pitch the ball to me and I would take batting practice with of him. I really enjoy doing this and spending time with my dad. My mom and I would ride bikes or take walks around the block together. This is a fun time because we both enjoy doing this and talk to each other about things. There have been many friends I have made in the neighborhood, older and younger than me. We would go to each others houses and spend time there with each other. Some activities that we would do is play some basketball, ride bikes, play captor the flag, whiffleball, and much more. Whiffleball is the game that we all love to play the most. Its fun hitting the ball in the air and seeing it like a plane ready to take off when it hits the bat and come down when it lands. There is a pool not too far away where I live so my friends and we would come here to have a blast there. We would also play at the playground that was there too. I really am thankful that my parents picked the right house and neighborhood. Without them I wouldn't have had the awesome childhood that I have had so far.

Life In Northeastern Ohio | I have been living in Northeastern Ohio all of my life and I really enjoy it. There are so many things that you can do in Northeastern Ohio. It is somewhat of a torn up town when you first drive into the city. As you get further and further into the city of Cleveland, then there are so many wonderful things to do. There are so huge buildings in Downtown Cleveland and some of them that are so big they can touch the clouds. One thing that you can do that I love doing is watch the Cleveland sports teams play. We have one for baseball (Indians), basketball (Cavilers), and football (Browns). It is a blast going to games because all of the fans are loyal to our teams. Also close to where the professional teams play, Cleveland State the college is located downtown as well as Case Western Reserve. I have been to both of these colleges and they both have very nice campuses to go to. There is a famous place that is located downtown and that is Tower City. Tower City is somewhat of a mall and has a few restaurants, and as well as a movie theater too. Everyday usually there is some sort of entertainment going on in Tower City. The last thing that I love about Northeastern Ohio is that all of the entertainment that is held downtown. We host a lot of concerts in arenas; there is a music theater that is very popular, and also Play House Square. Here they have a lot of famous plays that you can see done here. Cleveland is also famous for The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. Here you will see all of the famous artists that were involved in the music of Rock. These are a few of the reasons why I love living in Northeastern Ohio.

My Favorite Holiday Memory One of my favorite holiday memories that I have had as a child was celebrating Saint Nicholas as a family. Saint Nicholas is celebrated on his birthday which is the 6th, and it is a Nederland’s tradition. In Holland his name is called Sinterklass; he gets around on a horse, and has a sidekick or partner that helps him out. His partners name is called Sua Tapete. The reason why I celebrate this holiday here in the USA as a family is because my mom was born in Nederland’s. To celebrate this holiday as a family we usually would have dinner on a fondue pot and eat bread and crackers on Dutch cheese. When we eat we also would put on some Dutch music to listen to. After dinner as a family we would play some board games or just spend some quality time in the living room. Sometimes some Christmas shows or movies are all ready on and we would watch those. We would do this for about an hour and then we would put our shoes out. What we put in them are carrots or bread because that is what the horse likes to eat. Around 9 p.m. my sister and I would go upstairs to take showers and get our pajamas on. Then when we come down stairs we would see a big bag that had Sua Tapete’s name on it and it would be filled with presents. As a tradition everybody would get a chocolate letter with their first letter of their first name and in this case I would get an “S”. Then we would play with what we got and go to bed around mid-night. These are a few reasons why Saint Nick is my favorite holiday.

The Big Game It as the date of March 6, 2011 and it was the Division I CYO city championship game for basketball. The game was being played at John Carol University (JCU) in University Hts. Ohio and it was between Gesu Bulldogs and Holy Trinity Eagles. This was the best game I had ever played as a Bulldog this season. I had 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 steal and assist. When I first walked onto the court I could see the crowd of over 800 people still filing in to their seats. It was like a sea of blue and gold everywhere in the stands. There was even a student section that my classmates had which was awesome. Seeing so many people supporting us gave me a huge boost of exhilaration and energy. When it came to the end of the game we were down by two points and I got the ball, split a double team, and made a reverse lay-up from the right side to tie the game with 9 seconds to go. Holy Trinity came racing down the court and their big guy put up a lay-up but it spun right out. So it was neck and neck in overtime and then we were up by one when my friend and teammate Owen when to the foul line. Owen missed the first one way short but made the second one and so we were up by two with 7 seconds to go. Then Holy Trinity came down the court and did another lay-up and this time it did the same thing, it went in and out. We won the game 29-27 and once that final buzzer went off, so many people charged the court. There was a huge circle cheering at center court. Then we all got medals and when my name was the last called, I heard all of my students chanting “MVP MVP MVP.” After that my coaches got their medals and then we got the trophy, the hardware. We took a huge picture of the past all our alumni. We then took the celebration to O’Relly’s to celebrate the victory. The whole team ate burgers, salads, fries, nachos, wings. After we were stuffed we decided to go to my teammate Zach’s house for a sleep over. We took the trophy with us and were still celebrating before the night was over. All of us were eating junk food and candy; it was like we were partying so much we didn’t even know we had school the next day.
