FC: Socrates Pursuit of the truth
Socrates was a Greek philosopher, during Athens golden age. He was very controversial, because he tried to pursue what he that was the truth and while doing he found many things that opposed what most Athenians thought was the truth.
During his pursuit of the truth he found that the way debates were conducted were no practical, so he developed his own method called Socratic method of debate
The Athenian government was one of the things Socrates found that he took an issue with on his pursuit of the truth. Athenian government had started as monarchy and developed into a democracy, passes through tyranny, these are two of the tyrants Draco and Solon
In Athens democracy everybody voted on everything, Socrates did not believe that this was the best way for a democracy to go. In his pursuit of the truth he found that it would be best ever representatives were elected to vote for things and not the people directly.
Socrates also thought that the average man shouldn't be able to be elected only the smartest of the population should be able too.
Socrates taught this things to his student Plato (on the right) who in turn put them into a book called the Republic, then taught them to his student Aristotle (top)
Another thing that Socrates discovered on his pursuit of the truth was that (or at least in his opinion) the gods were not real. this was the most controversial and was immediately asked to stopped thinking this.
Because of his final believe that there were no Greek gods he was forced to poison himself by the Athenian government; Plato his student is at his knee and Aristotle is handing him the poison. Even as Socrates is dieing he is teaching, because he hopes that he can help others learn from his pursuit of the truth.
