St Dominic - Page Text Content

St Dominic was born in 1170 in the town of Caleruega in northern spain. He was born into the Guzman family who were quite wealthy. As a young man Dominic studied the liberal arts and theology at Palencia.

When he was about 30, Dominic accompained his bishop on several diplomatic missions around northern Europe. The Pope had then sent people to work against the movement but with their nice clothes, fine horses and lots of followers they only managed in reinforcing the Albigensians' beliefs. They believed that the soul is good and the body is evil.

In 1217 he sent a group of 16 people around Europe. He sent some to Paris to study theology and some to Bolonga to study law. Wherever they went they attracted others and then there were hundreds of followers in Dominic's order. Most of these followers were students and masters at universities

In 1220 the first meeting of the friars took place in Bolonga and then it was decided that the order would have a represtational system of government. These reprensentatives met again in 1221 and divided the order into provinces.

A little while after this meeting Dominic died in Bolonga in 1221. He was then canonized in 1234 so that people would remember him for what he had done in this world to make people believe that he did the right thing and hopefully people would still follow his order.
