What are geographers? Geographers are specialists who study Earth's features and its people, places, and environments.

The world in spatial terms Spatial relations mean "relations in space." This is how places, people, and features of the Earth are connected because of their locations.

What is absolute location? Absolute location is the exact latitude and longitude at which a place is found on the globe.

What is relative location? Relative location describes a place's location in relation to another place.

Places and Regions A place is somewhere on Earth with physical and human meaning. A region is larger than a place, and is made up of places that are similar to one another. A formal region is an area that shows common characteristics. A functional region is a place linked to smaller regions by roads, or other transportation systems. A perceptual region is seen by popular feelings or images of a place.

Physical Systems The landforms that shape the Earth's surface such as volcanoes, floods, and hurricanes.

Human Systems People change the Earth by settling it, forming communities, and moving. People move goods and ideas to new places, expanding knowledge.

Environment and Society People affect the environment by clearing or planting forests, building industries and cities, and hunting animals. Features of the environment such as mountain ranges and desert often show barriers in human migration.

The Uses of Geography Geographers provide important information about the planet's physical features and processes, living things, and human systems. Such information describes the planet and contributes to planning for future needs.

Why is geography important? Geography shows us where places are and how to get to places. Without geography we would be lost-literally. Geography also studies humans and how we live. This helps us understand ourselves and other cultures better.

 Key Words to Know 1.Absolute location 2.Relative location 3.Place 4.Region 5.Formal region 6.Functional region 7.Perceptual region

I hope by reading this book you learned about geography, its essential elements, and why geography is important. I hope you apply your new knowledge of geography to class and make your teacher proud!
