FC: The Legendary Kid By Caden Sager

'Twas on the same night when poor Billy died, He said to his friends, "I am not satisfied; There are twenty-one men I have put bullets through, And Sheriff Pat Garrett will make twenty-two."

Billy the Kid is a legendary outlaw of the American West. He was famous for his gunslinging as well as his daring escapes from the law.

Born with the name Henry McCarty, Billy's path in life changed soon after his mother's death. He became a juvenile delinquent and fled to Arizona at age 18, hence the title "The Kid".

Billy's first confirmed killing happened during a skirmish with "Windy" Cahill. Cahill had been bullying him and Billy finally decided to fight back. Near the end of the fight, Billy drew his pistol and shot Cahill in the heart. It was the first time he drew blood and officially began his career as an outlaw.

Billy took a job as a hired gun for John Tunstal, a rich rancher. The rancher formed a group called the Regulators who got involved in the Lincoln County Wars between ranchers. Billy gained a reputation for being the best gunfighter in the battle.

During the Lincoln County Wars Billy gunned down the local sheriff - Sheriff Brady. A $500 bounty was placed on his head and Billy went on the run and vowed to avenge the death of John Tunstal who was also killed in the wars.

Sheriff Garret, who was a friend of the Kid, arrested Billy and threw him in jail. He made another one of his skillful escapes. Garret tracked him down to a house and shot him blindly in the dark. Many people speculate that this story is false, and some even claim that Billy did not die, but lived on anonymously. In any case, Garret wrote a book about Billy the Kid that has made the Kid an infamous legend in American history.

Billy the Kid's legacy lives on today in films and songs. | Legend has it that he killed 21 men in his time as an outlaw, but like his life, this number has been greatly exaggerated.

Billy the Kid will be remembered as one of the greatest outlaws of the American West.
