1: The Adena are the first of three civilizations known as the Mound Builders.
2: The Mound Builders are groups of people that are known to build mounds that are used for different reasons.
3: The Adena were a group of Mound Builders that built conical mounds. Conical mounds are the oldest form of Mound Builder mounds, and the Adena used them to honor important people in their tribe who have died. These people can include their priests, chiefs, or shamans.
5: The Adena existed between 1000 B.C and 200 A.D. They lived in Ohio and West Virginia.

7: Archaeologists can tell that the Adena made these pots because of the designs on them. This pot is considered a food utensil because the Adena used it to store and carry water.

13: Archaeologists-scientists who dig up remains of people from a long time ago- found these jewelry pieces along with other artifacts. These artifacts included weapons, tools, writing, and clothing.
14: The Adena were farmers which means they grow crops for food. The Adena grew pumpkin, squash, and sunflowers. They gathered different grasses, seeds, nuts, and berries for food.
15: Archeologists never found any structures that the Adena built for shelter.
