4: The setting is in La Paz, Mexico, in both the impoverished area and the more wealthy area.
5: Kino, Juana, and Coyotito lived in a brush hut. | The doctor and wealthier people live in sand brick houses
6: Kino | Kino is the father of Coyotito and husband of Juana.
7: Juana | Mother of Coyotito and Wife of Kino.
8: Coyotito | Son of Kino and Juana.
9: Beggars | The beggars were people who had no home and sat outside the church and judged the sins of those who went in.
10: Chapter 1 | Kino wakes up and has breakfast. A scorpion stings Coyotito. Juana takes the baby to see the doctor. The doctor does not want to see the baby because the family has no money. Kino gets angry and punches the gate.
11: Chapter 2 | Kino and Juana go down to the beach. They take Kino's canoe out into the gulf to search for pearls for money. KLino finds a big oyster and a shining light came out of it. He opens the oyster and found the biggest pearl he had ever seen, but Coyotio's shoulder seemed to be healed.
12: Chapter 3 | The whole town came to see this magnificent pearl Kino found. Everyone had thought of ways Kino's pearl could help themselves, even the doctor noticed Kino. Kino told of all the things the pearl would bring him. The doctor gave Coyotito a capsule that would make him sick so that the doctor would could come back and save the baby's life and give Kino a bill. The that night someone tried to steal the pearl from Kino.
13: Chapter 4 | Kino went to sell this great pearl. The whole town came so they would not miss a thing. But, when Kino went to sell the peaarl the dealers said it was worthless. Kino grew furious and said he would go to the Capital and sell it there. Then that night, someone attacked Kino.
14: Chapter 5 | Kino awakes to Juana arising and moving towards the fireplace. She took the pearl and went to the beach to get rid of it, but Kino stopped her and took the pearl back. On his way to his house someone else attacked him and he killed the attacker. They decided they had to leave town and in preparation for leaving he discovers a hole in his canoe. Then, someone lit his house on fire, so they ran to his brother's house where they hid for a day, then left town the next day.
15: Chapter 6 | Kino and Juana are heading north in the wind avoiding leaving traces of there presence there. They were hiding and ended up running from the trackers. But, in the process of getting the rifle, Coyotito whimpered and the trackers thought it was a coyote and killed him. Then Kino and Juana return to the city. Finally, holding a rifle and Coyotito in her shawl on her her shoulder, they threw the pearl back in the gulf where it belongs.
16: The moral of this story is that one should never trust their eyes. Just because you see one thing doesn't mean it's not something else.
