2: J | John Steinbeck was born February 27, 1902. He attended college at Stanford; he dropped out before getting his degree. After he left college he became a laborer and journalist in New York

3: After he left college, he became a journalist and laborer. Steinbeck wrote many notable novels in the 1930s. He won the Pulitzer Prize in the 1940 and the Nobel Prize in 1962. John died December 20, 1968.

4: La Paz, Mexico is located on the Sea of Cortez. The natives in the 1600's were mistreated by the Spaniards who came to conquer them. People came in the late 1700's to live in the area, but they left because only a few people lived there. People were on edge because of the racial tension. | Setting: La Paz, Mexico

5: The poor people, Kino's race, lived in brush huts. They lived outside of town near the shore. The rich people like the doctor lived in nice homes with flowers planted around them. They lived in town

6: Kino: main character, husband of Juana, father of Coyotito, needed money to save his son, found the pearl of the world | Juana: Kino's wife, Coyotito's mom, said that the pearl was evil from the beginning | Coyotito: son of Kino and Juana, bit by a scorpion, reason Kino needed money

7: Trackers: 3 of them sent to search for Kino and his family, followed them up a mountain, unknowingly killed Coyotito, killed by Kino

8: Chapter 1: | Kino, Juana, and Coyotito are a poor Mexican Indian family. They live in La Paz, Mexico near the ocean. Coyotito was stung by a scorpion. After the doctor refused to go to the poor area, Kino took his family to the wealty doctor. The doctor wouldn't treat Coyotito because the boy was thought to be an animal. Kino was angry. He hit the gate in frustration and perhaps embarrassment.

9: Chapter 2: | The canoe his grandfather passed down to him was the only thing of value that Kino owned. Kino and his family went out into the ocean. Kino went diving for pearls. He found the pearl of the world. Coyotito's scorpion sting appeared to be getting better, but Juana thought that was because they found the pearl.

10: Chapter 3 | Everyone knew that Kino had found the pearl of the world. All were interested. Kino told the others what his family would do with the new wealth. Kino hid the pearl. The priest and the doctor visited Kino. The doctor drugged Coyotito to be able to "save" him. Someone broke into Kino's brush house. Juana says that the pearl will destroy them.

11: Chapter 4 | Kino and his family try to look nice when they go to sell the pearl. Many people followed them. The dealers said the pearl was fake and tried to scam him. Kino said he'd go to the capital to sell the pearl. Someone tries to break in again. Kino is attacked.

12: Chapter 5 | Juana tried to steal the pearl and throw it back into the ocean. Kino caught her. He hit and kicked her. As he was returning home with the pearl, he was attacked. Kino killed the man that attacked him. Juana was sent to get food and Coyotito. Juan Tomas hid them. Kino and his family escaped to the north.

13: They traveled quickly, quietly, and cautiously. Trackers started to follow Kino and his family. They traveled faster and left a more noticeable trail, but the trail was confusing. Kino, Juana, and Coyotito hid in a cave with the trackers below them. Kino quietly climbed down. Coyotito cried; the trackers thought it was a coyote. The trackers shot at the noise. Kino killed the trackers. Juana and Kino returned to their town. They brought Coyotito's body. Kino threw the pearl back into the ocean. | Chapter 6

14: Moral of the story? | Never let money or wealth consume you because no amount of money can buy happiness!
