3: John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, in 1902. He attended Standford University but left before getting his degree. Steinbeck had many, many jobs during his working life , and all the while he was | writing novels. His first job was being a caretaker for an estate at Lake Tahoe. Later on he became a filmmaker. Steinbeck, over the course of his life, had 3 wives. He died in 1968 after winning his Nobel Prize in 1962. | Author Summary

4: Setting

5: The Pearl takes place in a small village and town named La Paz near the coast in Mexico. The date is in the early 1900's. | Date.........Early 1900s Location.....La Paz, Mexico

6: CHARACTERS | Kino- The father of Coyotito and husband to Juana. Kino is the man who finds the pearl and is affected most by it. | Juana- the mother of Coyotito and wife to Kino. Juana remains faithful to Kino throughout the entire story.

7: Coyotito- the son of Juana and Kino. This baby is confused for an animal later in The Pearl and his shot in the head. | Apolonia- Kino's sister-in-law. Married to Juan, Kino's brother.

8: The setting starts in a peaceful town by the ocean. The mood is light but turns sinister when Coyotito, the main character's son, is stung by a deadly scorpion. Both Juana, the main character's wife, and Kino, the main character, are very superstitious. After Coyotito is stung, Juana wants the doctor which is shocking because the doctor would never take care of people so poor. They decided to walk to the doctor and ask for treatment of Coyotito's sting. When they arrived the doctor didn't want to treat such a poor family so he told his servant to tell Juana and Kino that he was out of town at a more serious case. Kino was so enraged that he punched the gate, causing his knuckles to split and bleed. | Chapter 1

9: The setting starts on the beach where Kino, Juana, and Coyotito board Kino's hand-me-down canoe. They row out to the sea to collect pearls. On one of Kino's dives, he spots a large, hidden oyster. He swims up to the canoe and opens it to find a large pearl. Then as soon as he holds the pearl, Coyotito's swollen shoulder miraculously begins to heal. | Chapter 2

10: The setting starts out back in the town. Word of Kino's find spreads quickly. When word spread to the doctor, he had a sudden "change of heat" , and he decided to treat Coyotito's wound. Kino is wondering what to do with the riches he will gain and decides to get married, buy a rifle, and send Coyotito to school. The priest comes to Kino's home and tells him to thank God by donating to the church. The doctor comes later in the night to treat Coyotito, but he was fine and the doctor gave him a pill intended to make the baby sick and fool the parents into believing the sting was causing it. Later the doctor comes back and gives Coyotito water with ammonia and asked about the pearl to get Kino to unintentionally reveal its location. | Chapter 3

11: The setting starts in La Paz. Kino decides to sell the pearl. Kino walked into the buyer's market and asks to sell it. The first buyer and two others will not buy it for more than 1,500 pesos in an attempt to scam Kino. Kino realizes what is happening and decides to go to the capitol to sell it. Later that night a stranger tries to steal steal the pearl, but Kino stopped him. Kino is cut and the criminal escapes. | Chapter 4

12: The setting starts at Kino's house but moves to the beach where Kino catches Juana trying to get rid of the pearl. Kino then punches her and kicks her in the side. Kino starts walking back home but is attacked and ends up killing a man. when the couple walks back home they discover that their house is on fire.They then take shelter in Juan Thomas's house. | Chapter 5

13: Kino and Juana walk toward the city to sell the pearl. They rest in the bushes and notice trackers following them. In an attempt to lose the trackers, they go up the mountain and rest in a cave. Kino kills them but a stray bullet kills the baby. they walk back to town and throw the pearl back into the ocean. | Chapter 6
