BC: I feel that the theme of this story is to learn to be happy with what you have. Being wealthy can not buy your happiness.

2: John Steinbeck The brilliant writer John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, in 1902. Steinbeck enrolled himself into Stanford University. To support himself he was a journalist in the great New York City. His first novel, Cup of Gold, was published in 1929. In the early 1940s, John became a filmmaker. Six years after winning a Nobel Prize he died of heart disease in 1968.
4: La Paz La Paz, Mexico was found on May 3, 1535. In the 19th century the town was classified by poor and rich citizens. The poor lived in brush hut villages, and the rich had actual cement wall houses made of stone and plaster with metal gates. In La Paz their was a church that had a group of gossiping beggars. Also there was a group of pearl buyers that tend to rip off their clients.
5: Coyotito: The son of Juana and Kino.
6: Kino: Husband of Juana and father of Coyotito.
7: Beggars: They stayed in front of the church and listened to peoples' confessions.
8: Juana: Wife of Kino and mother of Coyotito.
9: In chapter one, Kino"s baby was bitten by a scorpion. The family took Coyotito to see the doctor, but he refused to help them because they are poor Indians. Kino got mad and punched the gate.
10: In chapter two, Kino and Juana go out on canoes to find a pearl. The pearl is to be used as money to pay for Coyotito's scorpion sting treatment. Kino ends up finding the World's biggest pearl.
11: In chapter three, the whole town found out about Kino's great discovery. Kino spoke of everything he wanted to buy now that he is wealthy. The priest and doctor come to his hut that night. The doctor said he could heal Coyotito. That night and intruder came in trying to steal the pearl, and Kino hurt his forehead while scaring him off.
12: In chapter four, the day came for Kino to sell the pearl. All of the dealers said that the pearl was valueless. Because of this Kino plans to go to the capital the next day. That night Kino suffered a blow to the head by another intruder. He still refuses to get rid of the pearl that Juana believes to be evil.
13: In chapter five, Juana tried to throw away the pearl back into the ocean secretly. She failed at doing this because Kino caught her while in action. Kino is attacked yet again, except this time he killed the man. Now the family is moving to hide from punishment.
14: In chapter six, the family is carefully going to Loreta. They actually never made it there.The family hides in a cave in the mountain. Kino kills the trackers, and one of the trackers mistake Coyotito's cry for a coyote and kills him.
