2: Chapter 1 Summary Kino wakes up with a blanket over his face. The baby is in his hanging box when a scorpion stings him. Juana wants the doctor. The doctor refuses to help. Kino hit the gate.

3: Chapter 2 Summary The family get into the canoe. Juana made a seaweed poultice for the baby. Kino went diving for oysters. They found the pearl of the world..

4: Chapter 3 Summary Everyone found out about the pearl. Everyone now wants to help Kino. Kino starts imagining about material things like a rifle. He starts to plan his family's future. The doctor comes to see them at their home. The doctor purposely makes the baby sick. .

5: Chapter 4 Summary The attackers come in this chapter. Kino goes to the pearl buyers to sell the pearl. Everyone wants to come. The pearl buyers secretly work together. They make a small price and say that the pearl isn't worth much. Kino then decides to go to the capital. He also keeps hearing the sound of evil.

6: Chapter 5 Summary Juana thinks the pearl is evil so she tries to throw the pearl back. Kino then beat her because of it. The next morning the other people in the village burnt down Kino's house. Kino and his family hide in Kino's brother's house.

7: Chapter 6 Summary Juana and Kino run away. They hide their tracks as best as they can. They have to keep moving so the trackers don't find them. The trackers mistake Coyotito as a coyote and shoot him. The family return home and throw the pearl back into the ocean.

8: John Steinbeck was born in 1902. He went to Stanford University but left early to be a journalist. He won a Nobel prize in 1962 and died in 1968.

9: Kino is a loving father and husband.

10: Juana was the mother and the wife.

11: Coytito is a small fragile Indian baby boy.

12: This doctor is fat, ugly, and lazy. His hands are almost too big to drink out of a cup.

13: The setting is on a coast in Mexico outside of a large city.
