2: SETTING Place: La Paz, Mexico Time: Late 1900's

4: Kino His a Indian, pearl diver, and he is poor. He loves to go pearl diving and look for pearls. He has a wife anf a baby boy. He loves his family and will do anything for them.

6: Juana She is a devoted wife and mother. She is nice, caring, and loving. Juana prays for good thing to happen for her family. She cooks for Kino every morning.

8: ABOUT THE AUTHOR John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California on February 27, 1902. He was named after his father. After graduating from Salinas High School, he attended Stanford University; he got a major in English. John never graduated from college,but he had a successful life with his wife Carol Henning. In 1925, he moved to New York and started writing but it didn't turn out right so he returned home. John died on December 20, 1968.

10: Chapter 1 Summary The chapter begins with the main characters Kino, Juana, and Coyotito. It's a normal morning and Juana is up making ricecakes for Kino. Everything went by its day until the baby, Coyotito, its bitten by a scorpion. Kino,Juana,and the people n their village marched to the "Rich" part of town to see the doctor. The doctor didn't want to see them because they were poor and didn't have any money. Kino was furious and mad about the lack of help the doctor will give them.

11: Chapter 2 Summary In chapter 2, Kino and Juana goes peal fishing. Juana was praying for a pearl so that, they can have something to give to the doctor for the treatment. Kino finds a large oyster. He really isn't sure what he saw in the oyster: he thinks his eyes playing tricks on him. he finally opens it and he was found the pearl of the world..

12: Chapter 3 Summary Word quickly spreads about Kino's good forture through the town and to the neighbors. Now, that Kino has found the Pearl of the World, the doctor is going to come over to their house and treat their son. Kino is talking about all the things will happen with the

13: pearl. When everyone leaves their house, he goes dig a hole and go bury the pearl.

14: Chapter 4 Summary In this chapter, Kino is going to pearl buyers to sell the pearl. Kino doesn't accept the price of the pearl that the pearl buyers try to give him; he thinks it's worth so much more. They went home and got attack by someone he couldn't see. Juana tells

15: Kino to throw the pearl back because it is evil.

16: Chapter 5 Summary Kino wakes up and finds that Juana is missing. Kino sees her taking the pearl so he follows her. Juana is at the sea getting ready to throw the pearl back into the sea until Kino attacks her from behind. When, Kino goes back to the house a man attacks him; | .

17: Kino stabs him with his knife. Kino and Juana is trying to escape but there is a hole in the canoe. When, they go back to the house they discover it on fire. Kino's brother Juan told them to go north to the mountains.

18: Chapter 6 Summary In this chapter, Kino, Juana, and their son begin their journey. Kino is very smart and covers their tracks. Kino and his family hide

19: in a cave. The trackers are near the cave when they hear a sound that sounds like a coyote. really the sound is Coyotito. The trackers shoot their gun over there by the cave and kill the baby. Kino is mad because he lost his only son and he meant the world to him. Kino kills all the trackers and at the end of the book, he throws the pearl back into the sea because he realized that it brings not but trouble.

20: COYOTITO He is a sweet and a well behaved baby. He gets bit by a scorpion. He is the son of Kino and Juana. At the end, he mistakenly gets shot.

22: THEME The Pearl becomes evil and thats when everything goes wrong.
