FC: The Pearl by John Steinbeck

 Emily H. 2nd. Mrs. Crew. 10.27.09.

The author's name is John Steinbeck. Some things I know about his life are how he was born in California in 1902. His father was a treasurer and his mother was a teacher.

Kino is Coyotito's Father and Juana's husband. He is also the finder of the pearl.

Juana is Coyotito's mother and Kino's wife.

Coyotito is the baby of Kino and Juana.

The doctor made Coyotito sick, then helped him to make himself look like a good doctor so Kino would pay him with money from the pearl.

Chapter Summary 1 Chapter one starts off with Kino and his family, Juana his wife, and Coyotito his baby, all in the small brush house. They were having a normal morning when a scorpion made it's way down the hanging on Coyotito's bed. Being the baby that he is, Coyotito shook the rope and the scorpion fell on him, stinging him on the shoulder.

Kino, in his anger, stomped the scorpion to a speck in the ground while Juana sucked the poison out of the baby. After being told the doctor would not come to them, Juana and Kino set out to the town, followed by the people of the brush houses. Unfortunately, the doctor was far too prejudiced, and had his servant deny Kino and Juana, telling them that the doctor was out on an important case. Kino struck the gate with his fist from his shame.

Chapter Summary 2 Kino and Juana set out back to their house after being denied by the doctor. Juana wrapped Coyotito to her and the small family set out on Kino's canoe and into the ocean. Kino jumped into the ocean and started searching for a pearl as he often did. Juana was sitting in the canoe praying to God that he would help them find something to help Coyotito

get better, all the while she had a seaweed poultice placed on his sting. Kino arose from the water and got into the boat with an anxious face. After opening two oysters, Juana tells Kino to open the large oyster. He didn't want to open it first because he was afraid that all he saw was an illusion, and he knew it was never a good thing to want something too much. Kino opens the oyster and finds the Pearl of the World.

Chapter Summary 3 In chapter three everyone finds out about the pearl. The Priest wonders to himself if he has ever baptized Kino's child, or even married him. Then the doctor decides that he will treat Kino's child. But his mind flashes to Paris and him sitting at a restaurant. In the pearl, Kino saw many things. Kino saw Juana and him getting married in the church, and

he also saw Juana and him in new clothes and Coyotito was in school learning. Kino also saw himself with a rifle. The Priest visited Kino and after he left, the doctor came for a visit to 'check up on the baby.' The doctor used Kino and Juana's ignorance to his advantage and made them think that Coyotito was still sick. He made the baby sick and came back in an hour and gave him the antidote, then he asked about the pearl.

While the doctor was asking about the pearl, he was watching Kino's eyes. Accidentally, Kino glances in the direction of the pearl, and the doctor knows where it is hidden. In the night, Kino attacks a man for trying to steal his pearl.

Chapter Summary 4 In chapter four, Kino, Juana, and Coyotito go into the city with Juan Thomas and his wife. They are on their way to sell the pearl. While walking, Juan Thomas tells Kino a story as an example of why he should be careful. The three pearl buyers try and trick Kino to buy his pearl far less than what it should cost. Kino makes the statement that he will

go to the capitol and sell his pearl there, for he thinks he has been cheated. During the night, Kino is once again attacked for the pearl, and again he fights. He says to Juana that he will go to the capitol tomorrow and sell it, and she insists that she go with him.

Chapter Summary 5 In this chapter, Kino awakens to Juana getting out of the bed at night. He follows her to find that she is about to throw the pearl into the sea. Chasing after her, Kino ends up beating her and leaving her to go back to his house. On his way back, someone else attacks him for the pearl and he drops it and fends off the man, killing him.

Juana got up from the beach and made her way back to the house, finding the pearl in her path. She also finds Kino and the man he has murdered. The family hides themselves in Kino's brother's home until the next nightfall. Juan Thomas gives Kino a knife, and tells Kino to 'Go with God.'

Chapter Summary 6 In the final chapter of this story, Kino and Juana embark on their journey to the capitol. Kino tells Juana to keep Coyotito quiet while he listens. Upon listening, he hears three trackers. Two bent low to the ground, and one riding horseback. Trying to fool the trackers, Kino and Juana head into the mountains.

Kino has a scuffle with the trackers on the mountain right as the tracker with the rifle shoots his weapon. Kino ends up killing all three o the trackers, but is anguished along with Juana that his son was killed by the rifle. Kino and Juana walked back through the city and back to the brush houses where Kino threw the evil pearl into the sea.

The theme of this story is that Greed can turn you into someone you aren't and ruin many wonderful things in your life.
