FC: The Pearl By John Steinbeck

1: Michelle Russell Mrs.Crew's class 4th Hour Nov.2,2010

3: John Steinbeck was born in California in 1902. In 1919 he went to Stanford. In 1929 he wrote his first novel,Cup of Gold. Through the years of 1929 and 1962 he wrote books. John Steinbeck died in 1968 after he won the Nobel prize in 1962. After he died his books were still being published. He wrote many different types of books. he wrote short stories, financial stories, strong novels, film making books, marine studies, war, novelette, drama, and a saga of his own family's history. His last few years of his life were spent with his third wife in new York. John Steinbeck published many more books before he died.

5: La Paz Kino lived in the poor side of La Paz. The doctor lived in the Rich and wealthy side of La Paz.

6: KINO He is the husband of Juana and the father of Coyotito.

7: JUANA Mother of Coyotito, and wife to Kino.

8: COYOTITO Son to Kino and Juana. Nephew of Juan Thomas and Apollonia.

9: DOCTOR A greedy doctor who takes care of the people in La Paz.

10: Chapter 1 summary Kino and his family are very poor people. They live close to a beach which they can hear from their home. Everything has its own song. To kino and juana scorpions are evil. Coyotito was stung by a scorpion in their brush home. Juana wanted to take Coyotito to the doctor. Kino hate the doctor. When they get to the doctor, he doesn't treat Coyotito. Mainly because they are poor and have no money.

11: Chapter 2 summary The only thing of value they own is a canoe. It was passed down from his grandfather. Kino knew the only way for Coyotito to get treated is for him to find a pearl. So they all went pearling and Kino found a huge pearl.

12: Chapter 3 summary The news about the pearl spread quickly over La Paz. Kino decided to go into town, and cash in the pearl. He knew he wanted to get married, buy a rifle, get new clothes, and for Coyotito to go to school. The doctor finally came to check on coyotito. He tricked Kino, and made Coyotito sick so he could treat him. Then he could get some of the money from the pearl. Juana thinks that the pearl is evil and wants to get rid of it, but Kino will not let her.

13: Chapter 4 Summary Kino and Juana went into town with Juan to cash in the pearl. Juan told Kino to be careful not to get cheated. The dealer told kino it was only worth 1,000 pesos. Kino didn't take the offer, because he felt cheated. Kino was attacked by a man on the way home that night. Kino and Juana were both injured. Kino thought he lost the pearl forever, but Juana found it and gave it back to him.

14: Chapter 5 Summary In the middle of the night, Juana tried to take the pearl and through it back into the ocean. Kino awoke to find she was gone, so he found her and beat her. Kino and Juana ran back to their brush house. They quickly found that it was on fire. Kino had killed the man that attacked him, and they knew that they would be killed. So they went to tell Juan that they were leaving. they were going to the capital. Juan tries to hide them in his brush house, but they left anyway.

15: Chapter 6 Summary They walked all night, and Juana wondered if the men were following them. She thought it may have been the dealers. They were finally at the mountains, and they decided to hide there.The sun started to set, and the trackers were in the mountains with them. they were asleep, and Kino was plotting to kill them. He stripped to camouflage himself with his surroundings. The Trackers awoke to Coyotito's cry, and they thought it was a coyote puppy. One of the trackers took his gun, and shot Coyotito in the dark. He died after being shot. Kino killed all of the trackers. After they were all dead, Kino and Juana came back to La Paz. They walked through town while everyone stared. They made their way to the ocean, holding hands. They threw the pearl back into the ocean. They were finally free of the evil.

17: MORAL I believe the moral is that you can still be a happy person without riches. You don't have to be rich to be happy. Kino is a happy person with just his wife, and son. The doctor is a very rich person, and he isn't very happy.
