La Paz, Mexico La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur in Mexico. La Paz was first established by hunter-gatherers around May 1535. La Paz is the main city in John Steinbeck's book, the Pearl.

JUANA wife of Kino and mother of Coyotito

Coyotito son of Juana and Kino

KINO husband of Juana and father of Coyotito

DOCTOR Spanish ruler over the Indians

CHAPTER 1 | In this chapter, we saw who Kino, Juana, and Coyotito are. Coyotito was stung by a scorpion, and Juana and Kino rushed him to the doctor. The doctor refused to help them because they were poor!

CHAPTER 2 | Kino and Juana went to the beach and went out in the water in the canoe. Kino found many oysters and one had a shiny pearl in it. The were both very excited. The swelling and poison from the sting was leaving the baby's body.

CHAPTER 3 | The news about Kino finding the pearl spread to everyone in the town. The priest came to visit Kino and Juana to ask what they were going to do now that they had money. The doctor came to cure the baby and pretended he didn't know about the pearl. When Juana and Kino went to sleep, someone tried to steal the pearl.

CHAPTER 4 | Juana and Kino went to the pearl buyers to sell them the pearl. The first man said it wasn't worth anything, but Kino felt cheated, so three more pearl buyers came in, and they all said it was not worth much. Kino said he would go to the capitol to sell the pearl. When Kino went outside during the night, he was attacked by someone who wanted to steal the pearl.

CHAPTER 5 | When Kino went to sleep, Juana woke up and tried to throw the pearl back in the ocean. Kino heard her get up, and he followed her to the ocean. Kino stopped Juana right before she threw it, and he beat Juana after he got it back. When Kino was walking back to the house, he killed a man that approached him. Later, someone burned down Kino and Juana's house. Kino, Juana, and Coyotito went to Juan Tomas' house to hide until night time so they could escape without anyone seeing them.

CHAPTER 6 | Kino, Juana, and Coyotito walked for a long time to escape the town. Kino felt someone around them and he spotted three trackers looking for him. Kino and Juana walked up the mountain to escape them. They hid for a while, then Kino went down the mountain to try to kill the trackers. He killed all three of the trackers. One tracker thought there was a coyote and he shot at the sound, but it was Coyotito making the noise, and he killed the baby. Kino and Juana walked back to La Paz and went straight to the ocean to throw the pearl back into the water.

The moral of this story is that everything is not what it seems. Kino thought the pearl would bring fortune and happiness to his family, but it really brought death and unhappiness. Although many things seem luxurious, they probably have a bad side to them, also.
