2: John Steinbeck was born in 1902 in California. He grew up in an agricultural valley near the pacific coast. In 1919 he enrolled at Stanford University and studied literature and writing courses. John wrote a total of twenty-seven books, and he received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962. John died in 1968.

5: Over 10,000 years ago, neolithic hunter-gatherers left rock paintings of their existence in La Paz. Hernan Cortes arrived at the bay near La Paz on May 3, 1335. He tried to make it a colony but gave up after many years. In 1956 Sebastian Vizcano named the area La Paz.

10: Chapter 1 | Kino and Juana's baby, Coyotito, was stung by a scorpion. They rush the baby to the doctor, but the doctor refuses to help them because of their race.
11: Chapter 2 | Juana is in the canoe with Coyotito while Kino is collecting oysters. Juana prays that they will find a pearl that they can use to pay the doctor. Kino finds the perfect pearl.
12: Chapter 3 | Kino is telling his neighbors what he is going to use the pearl to buy. Kino buries the pearl to keep it safe. Then the doctor arrives at Kino's home and says that he is going to cure the baby. When the doctor leaves, Kino reburies the pearl in a safer place. That night, Kino catches someone in his home looking for the pearl.
13: Chapter 4 | Kino and his family take the pearl to the pearl buyers. The pearl buyers offer much less than what Kino deserves. Kino gets angry and decides to go to the capital to sell his pearl. Kino gets attacked that night for the second time.
14: Chapter 5 | Juana tries to sneak out of the house to throw the pearl back into the sea, but Kino catches her and beats her. Kino is attaked again but kills his attacker. Someone set Kino and Juana's brush house on fire. Kino and his family are now hiding at Juan Tomas and Apollonia's house.
15: Chapter 6 | Kino and his family are running away. Three trackers are following Kino's family. Kino takes Juana and Coyotito to the mountain and leaves them in a cave. Then he sneaks up behind the trackers and kills them right after one of the trackers shoots Coyotito. Kino and Juana then return to La Paz and throw the pearl back into the sea.
