Mr. Steinbeck has written many novels.

The Pearl was set in La Paz, Mexico. La Paz was first settled in 1811 and is known for its pearl fishing.

The doctor lived in the rich part of the town. In this area they did not worry about the poor, like Kino's family. Kino and his family lived on the beach in the poor area.

Kino is the father and the husband to Juana and Coyotito. Kino is young and strong and will do anything to keep his family safe. He is the 'man of the house.'

This is Juana, she is Kino's wife and the mother to Coyotito. Juana is calm and listens to her husband.

This is the baby, Coyotito. He is stung by a scorpion at the beginning of the story. Juana sucks out enough of the poison before it could kill him, but he ends up dying anyway.

This is the doctor. He is rich, lives in the nice part of town, and only cares for the wealthy people. The doctor sent Kino and his family away when the asked for help; he refereed to them as animals.

In chapter 1 of "The Pearl Kino and Juana's first born baby, Coyotito was stung by a scorpion. After Coyotito was stung, Kino's Family song quickly changes to an Enemy song. Juana tries to suck the venom out of her son. She wants the doctor to come to her house, but is told by everyone that the doctor would not come; so she tries to go to him. The doctor rejects the family since they are a poor, Indian family, who has no money. After being turned down by the doctor, everyone left Kino and his family. Out of anger from the doctor not helping, Kino lashes out and punches the wall. He stands there and just watches the blood run down his fingers.

In chapter 2 of "The Pearl" Kino and Juana go to sea in search of a pearl. Kino values his canoe very much. It had been his grandfather's once, now his. They go out in the sea and Kino goes looking for a pearl by taking a rock and a basket with him. He finds a big oyster all alone and takes it. When he gets back to his canoe, he opens it to discover it has the pearl inside.

In chapter 3 of "The Pearl" everyone in town finds out about the discovery of the pearl by Kino. All the neighbors gather around their house. The priest comes and so does the doctor. The doctor treats Coyotito and acts as he had no clue of the pearl. Kino plans everything they are going to do with the pearl and has hope that everything is going to work out for them. They know the pearl brings evil, but they are going to work through it.

In chapter 4, Kino, Juana, and Coyotito get dressed up to go to the pearl buyers. All of the town knows and wants to see what Kino is going to get. The pearl buyers tell Kino the pearl is no good because of its size. The best deal he could get was 1,500 pasos. Kino knew that the pearl was worth more than that; he left without the trade. The family realizes that the pearl is evil, but is still not giving it up.

In chapter 5, Juana tries to get rid of the pearl. When Kino sees this he attacks her. Kino is attacked again and his house gets caught on fire. When they try to escape, they find a hole in his canoe. Kino does not know what to do. He goes to his brother's house until they have a chance to escape. Kino's brother tells him to "go with God" as he leaves.

In chapter 6, Juana and Kino escape out of town. They cover their steps so that they wont be traced. After hiding out, Kino hears noises and sees that trackers are coming for him. The trackers have a rifle and a horse. Kino and his family get to the mountains. The trackers hear baby cry and shoot their gun in the direction. The gun ends up shooting Coyotito in the head and he dies. Kino finally throws the pearl back in the sea; Kino and Juana walk home side by side.

I think that the theme of the story is that you can not trust your eyes. Kino sees many opportunities once he found the pearl, yet none of them ever happened.
