3: John Steinbeck | Eh was born in Salinas, California, in 1902. In 1919 he went to Stanford University where he enrolled in writing and literature classes. He lft in 1925 with out a degree. He died in 1968, only winning a Noble Prize in 1962.
5: LA Paz, Mexico | In the fifteenth century,on May third, 1925, Hernan Cortez, first arrived in La Paz calling it Villa de la Santa Cruz. This land has always resisted being conquered by force. With the average yearly temperature in La Paz ninety-seven degrees give or take a degree, the terrain was tough to conquer. La Paz, now the capital of southern or lower Baja.
6: Father of Coyotito and husband to Juana. Pearl diver and seller. | Kino
7: Coyotito | Son of Juana and Kino. Killed at the end of the story.
8: Juana | Mother of Coyotito and wife of Kino. Quiet and respectful to Kino.
9: Doctor | Fat, greedy doctor of La Paz. He is very raciest and disrespectful.
10: Chapter 1 Summary | Readers meet Kino, Coyotito, and Juana. Coyotito, the child, gets stung by a scorpion. The doctor refuses to treat Coyotito. Kino gets angry and smashes his hand against the wall.
11: Chapter 2 Summary | At the beginning of chapter two Kino and his family journeyed to the reef. There Kino discovered a large majestic pearl. Coyotio's sting healed, and Juana was astounded. At the end of the chapter Kino was bombarded by divers, and everyone was astounded.
12: Chapter 3 Summary | By the time Kino reached his house, everyone in the town knew about his discovery. Kino invites all of his friends and family to see the pearl. Kino sites his plans to the people. Later that night the doctor and the priest comes and visits Kino. The priest basicall asks for money, but the doctor tricks Kino and pretends to heal Coyotito.
13: Chapter 4 Summary | Kino heads to the pearl dealers to sell his pearl after a long morning of getting prepared. A large crowd follows him. All of the dealers offer Kino a low price, and the highest bid was fifteen hundred pesos. Kino becomes angered and decides to go to the Capital City to sell his pearl. That night Kino was attacked by a strange dark figure. At the end, Kino prepares to leave.
14: Chapter 5 Summary | In the middle of the night Kino awakes to find Juana stealing the pearl. He follows her to the shoreline were he beats her for trying to throw the pearl into the sea. On his way back to the brush house Kino was attacked again by a strange figure. He kills the man. He and Juana, along with Coyotito try to leave town. Their canoe had a hole in it. The next night Kino and Juana leave for Capital City.
15: Chapter 6 Summary | They sneak out of town and head inland. The slyly travel in wagon tracks and hide their steps. They stop at daylight and rest. Kino quickly realizes they are being followed. The family travels to the mountains where they take shelter. At nightfall the trackers arrive in the mountains. Kino kills the trackers, but Coyotito was shot in the battle. Kino and Juana return to town and cast the pearl into the sea.
